How to tame a very nervous and timid young colt?
he is 9 month old and i can`t get anywhere near him
i had this problem about a year ago..... you have to f*@% it's butt, then it will know you are the master and the authority... that's what i did, and now it is completely tame
I was assigned to work with a 6 month old filly who was very hard to halter. We put her in a stall for a week or so, and I stood in the stall while she ate her grain. Then I started holding the bucket while she ate from it. It took her a while to be comfortable with that, and then I started holding a halter next to the bucket. Then the halter was in the bucket, so she had to touch it with her nose while she ate. Then I held the halter so that she had to put her nose through it to get her grain. Finally after lots of patience and quietly standing with her, I was able to put her halter on her.

If you can keep him in a smaller paddock for a while, or at least feed him in a smaller space, that will help. Spend a lot of time around him. When you feed him, stand as close as you can while he eats, and talk quietly to him. As he gets used to you, and begins to stand quietly while you are near, begin standing closer each time. Don't rush, or grab at him, as that will set him back in learning to trust you.

Do you have any other horses around who are quiet to handle? Handle them lots where the colt can see it. That can also help him learn what you want him to do and to see that you are okay. It may also help him to be calmer if the other horse is nearby while you are working with the colt.

Have worked with many foals, weanlings and yearlings, and was just told this morning that a young filly (timid little one that is half sister to the one that I mentioned) that I had trained was the friendliest, best behaved young horse that that person had ever handled.
