Why do Hermit Crabs love bread so much?

Over my years of keeping Hermit Crabs, I found bread to be their favourite food.

Between bananas, apples (or other fruits), raw meat, hermit crab mix, and bread, they seem to devour white bread like there's no tomorrow.

Any explanation why? Is wheat a suitable diet for them?
Hermit crabs are scavengers, and therefore will eat just about anything (whether it is really nutritious for them or not). Sometimes crabs can be rather picky while others devour everything they can get. And while it's important to stay away from commercial hermit crab foods because they contain some ingredients and preservatives (such as copper sulfate) that are harmful for the crabs, it's also important that the diet given to them is free of preservatives, sugars , and salts.

The ideal diet for a hermit crab is fruits and vegetables along with sources of protein (meats, eggs, exoskeleton, etc.) And calcium (eggshells, cuttlebone, etc.).
