how much does it cost to brake a horse to ride?

hi my name is melany and i may be getting a horse for my 16th bday i have had a horse be for and i have leased but the horse we are thing of getting is not broken to ride yet she is an app and she is 5 years old and is about 15.5 hi was just wondering how much it would cost to brake her so i can ride her at fair?
Hi Melany,

The going rate to start a horse under saddle ranges from $ 600.00-$ 1000.00 for 30 days depending on the detailed disapline you want to use your horse for. To do your basic trail riding it's closer to the $ 600.00 for 30 days and sometimes it can take several months of consistent riding to get the horse broke well enough for a noviced rider and I would hope would include some lessons for you with your horse. Make sure you ask around and get a reputable trainer because there are a lot of people out there who call themselves trainers that are not.
To be honest it doesn't sound like you're ready for a youngster. If you cut corners and can't afford a decent trainer you could end up with an unrideable monster. Money should not be the primary consideration when choosing a good trainer! It should be records, references and the quality of horses they've already broken to ride. Appys can be particularly stubborn beasts too.

It could be a year until this horse is really ready to be ridden out properly, especially if you send it to a proper trainer, especially somewhere loud and scary as a fair!

Also there's no such thing as 15.5hh! 15.5 is really 16.1! 1 hand is 4 ", so 15hh, 15.1, 15.2, 15.3 then 16hh! That's horsey basics and it's a bit worrying if you're getting an unbroken horse and you don 't have the basics down!
Cheap/free - if you do it yourself

or it really ranges as to where you send your horse, good livery yards offer a breaking service and you'll send your horse on breaking/schooling livery for a certain number of weeks most say no less than 4 weeks. and that price can range from £ 120 per week (everything included) - £ 500 per week (at a dedicated schooling yard)

really depends where you are thinking of sending her (what you would like to do with her in the future?) just ring around and enquire :-)

Hope you get on well! Goodluck!
