I have 4 adult cats and a Corgi welsh adult dog. I am moving from LA to Michigan. I heard you need a passport for dogs not sure for cats tho. Approximately how much is it to take a cat/dog on an airplane? What documents do you need to take them? Can the cats travel in one big kennel? Is it better to travel by Amtrak if i have this many pets? Can I take one of the cats with me on the plane on my lap in a small carrier ?

Each airline has different fees and rules. You can expect to pay between $ 50 and $ 200 per pet just for the flight. You will need to check each airline for specific costs.
Some airlines allow more than one pet per kennel, but that is usually limited to 2 of the same species and it must be within the weight limits. You might be able to take a cat in a carrier in the cabin, but don't expect to pay less to do it. The rules for in cabin pets are stricter as the carrier has to fit under the seat.

You will need airline approved carriers that are big enough for the pets. If you have some, that is great but make sure they can be used. Many airlines let you rent carriers form them for the trip for a fee. If you need to buy carriers, then factor that into the cost.
Some airlines require a health certificate from a vet no more than 10 days before the flight. Each pet will need one, but check with the airline on if you will need one as some don't require it. You may also need some vaccination, but that is regulated by the state.
It is probably less stressful to travel by plane as long as the drive/train would be more than 1 day of travel. A flight is the length of the flight plus about 2-3 hours before and a couple after (how long it takes to get to where you are going). A train/drive is them in the carrier pretty much all day and night for a couple days.
It is a very good idea to travel with your pets. Shipping them and going another way yourself is not a good idea unless you have no other option. If you fly, they should be on the same flight. If you drive they should be in the car. If you take the train, they should be on it too. You have more control over what happens and can be there to drop them off and pick the up as well as if something happens.
