I want to get a sugar glider but i wouldn't know when i was ready to take it outside i know you cant put leads or harnesses on them because it is dangerous but how do you prevent it from running away, and how do you know if you are fully bonded? If it were to run away would you be able to stop it? I saw a video of a lady who said never take them outside, but that is what i would hope to achieve when i get my sugar glider. Were is the best place to take it out, Some were not near trees i am guessing!? Thanks
I have two sugar gliders.
Your point of having seen plenty of videos with people doing this is a bit .. well .. irrelevant. The fact is that many people do things that should never be done. Taking them outside to run around is one of them.
If the glider were to run away, the chances are that you would not be able to catch it.
You will hear from some that a bonded glider will not run from you, but the fact is that all it takes is one thing to spook to the glider to make their actions extremely unpredictable. Now, ideally the glider would stay on you - but , when the glider is spooked by something, their actions are going be (as I said) unpredictable (like with any animal, really), so you run the risk of the glider running off instead.

You should also know that sugar gliders are colony creatures and should be kept in pairs or groups.

Taking them outside is dangerous not only beause they could easily run away , but also because they aren't used to "outside" germs and can get sick easily. Also, if it ran away outside and came across another animal like a cat or dog, it would get killed pretty fast. Just keep your suggies inside and they will be perfectly happy. I have had 3 sugar gliders.
It is never a good idea to play with any small pet outside. There is always a risk that it will run off or hurt itself. Just because you have seen other people doing it doesn't mean that it is safe. Keep him indoors, there's no reason to take him out anyway.
I wouldnt do it. once it touches the ground you will not be able to catch it and if you do you are really lucky
Keep It in Its cage. Don't let go outside if you do it will run the **** away! and catching It Is a *****!
First off please do not get just one sugar glider they are very social and should be in pairs or groups.

When bonding with your glider figure out what there fav treat is. Once they trust you enough to take them out, the next step is getting them to come out to you. Use food to bribe as well as a reward for when they do. Only provide this treat when they are physically with you as incentive.
A tame glider allows you to handle it. A bonded glider will seek you out.
When you are bonded. You can attempt taking them places. Use a zippered pouch with a viewing window. Their first few trips out they do not leave the pouch. Then when you feel confident make sure you are in a secure place (one you can retrieve them). And unzip, calling them out with rewards. Work up to other places. It takes time and patience.
Never take them out with out a pouch and treats. Do not take them out until fully bonded to you.
