My boyfriend and I recently purchased a kit. We have been working on nip training and it's going well. He is learning that human hands are not playthings. We have been using the old school method of scruffing him and telling him no. (It is impossible to be mad at that adorable yawn!) The only problem is treat time. Whenever we want to give him a bit of something tasty he goes absolutely crazy and nearly takes our fingers off. This is our first experience in the wonderful world of ferrets and all our literature does not cover this critical info. So I was wondering, are all ferrets bad at taking treats? Do they literally need to be put on the floor for the fuzzy or put on a spoon? Or do we just have a little mongrel on our hands? (if so we will love him anyway!) Thanks in advance for any help provided!
It's funny you asked that question because one of my ferrets when we first brought him home he went wild for treats (ferrevite ) but after a little while getting used to it he started to calm down when treats were given to him. They grow out of it as they get older.

I know EXACTLY what you mean with that YAWN ...!.. That yawn is a sign of submission to you, That is a good sign that it can be behaviorally trained to alter or correct to your discretion ... It's a bit of a job and commitment in the beginning, but has to be done to have an enjoyable Ferret .. There are several methods or ways to train them ... If you need me to edit this and add the details to train him to fit your criteria just (edit) add to your question .. Joe Yambor please elaborate.
This happened to me a few days ago. I also just recently bought a kit.
He could probably smell the treat on your finger, and thought it was food.
While I'm here, I would like to recommend you an excellent ferret forum (no, I'm not being paid lol) ..

Keep in mind that these little dudes are predators. VERY effective predators. They often kill and eat animals as large or larger than themselves. Not all of them can be safely hand fed due to the aggressive nature required to survive in the wild.
