are my hermit crabs dead?

i have a hermit crab for only 2 weeks

and i picked it up and it wont move

its in its shell and its claw is just hanging out

even when i touch it it doesnt move

but I took care of it every way it told me to ..

some people said they will be like this when molting, but i dont know if this sounds right ..

it was fine yesterday, it was hiding for a couple days and yesterday it came out and walked around and now it isnt moving
hermit crabs usually dont move all that much because they rarely survive very long as pets. Nobody knows why. They just do better in the wild. Anyway, i've owned a few hermit crabs. you can't tell if they are dead by smell because hermit crabs have waste in their shells which stink. For mine i would take them and gently shake them or touch them and see if they move. if they are dead they'll fall out of the shell. For you, try touching the claw or putting a piece of paper in the claw and see if it grips it. if not it is almost certainly dead.
If hermies are provided the criteria they need, they are known to live for a decade or longer. This is not as long as some would live in the wild, but is a considerable amount of time to live in captivity .
