I have a 17 year old Appaloosa mare, I found out she has a back problem and it just started to bother her last week. My mom said that she doesn't want to call the chiropractic (but she will if we have too). So she was wondering if there was anything that might help us save money like a book or something, So we can do it ourselves. I wish I knew what to do to help my horse but Im only 13: (Can someone please help me?
What kind of "back problem" does she have, and how did you find it? That will play a big role in whether or not you can do anything yourself.
Could your saddle be causing any problems? Double and triple check that (if you're not sure, do a google search for saddle fitting to find some help); if it's your saddle, simply getting one that fits better may solve the problem.
There are books out there for equine massage, etc. But I wouldn't recommend doing that unless you get the chiro out and get an okay from them. You wouldn't want to make the problem worse!
My advice: call the chiropractor out this once and let him/her tell you what is wrong with your horse and how to fix it. Without being there and seeing your horse, no one can tell you what to do for her back.
