Okay, I am very down to earth and trying to save earths species ... but is it wong to have a racoon as a pet (Of course i'm not going o have one but .. anyways ..) Cant you like clip there nails and get them right when they are born and raise them to be the way you want? Cause cats are kinda exactly like racoons. And in 10 years or sumfin (when im 25) I will (hopefully) open a unique No.kill animal shelter:)
i had to pet raccons. 2 of them
we found them as babys and the mother was dead,
they are the worst pet ever
even if raised by babys at first they are cute & cuddley then when they get a few monthes old
they are horrible they get into everything in your house nothing is safe they knock stuff over &
try to eat everything they will climb curtians ripping them climb tv stands
even climb the walls they are like adhd kids.
they can open cabinets & figure out how to get into anything they will break into your food cabinets & eat everything they destroy anything in their path no joke soon the wild starts showing they will hiss at you growl bite pull hair scratch no matter how good you train them they are like that
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com mine slept with me followed me everywhere was litter box & leash trained but when they realize they are wild there is no stopping it.thats why they are called wild animals. ours broke out of our house & ran away my dad left the window open last summer & came home to her in our house with her babys eating all our food & it was her bc she still had her collar on & he took it off of her & shooed her out with her babys.
It would be an ok pet to have if you had an outdoor refuge-type shelter, but a very bad pet indoors. Raccoons are particularly mean by nature, and need a lot of room to keep from being restless to the point of harming you ... they're kinda like chimps, but smaller and less intelligent and with really vicious claws and teeth. It would be a very noble idea to keep one outside in an enclosure, just not one in your house or inside a shelter. They are a wild animal that is best to be kept as close to the wild as possible if not able to be rehabilitated. I say go for it, just outside. I love your enthusiasm for earth's creatures, and I do hope you find a way to help them when you're older if you can:)
Racoons naturally carry many desises. There nature is fairly different because they where not bred, like dogs and cats where, to be tame. Domestication is all about breeding. Even in today's Russia they are mating silver foxes to be tame. At the moment raccoons awe very cannibalistic for starters, there claws and teeth are sharp and they are prone to diseases. And I personally think that no animal should be chained inside that was born free, and has lived free in peace, like raccoons and foxes.
Hi

Yes i think it is wrong, raccoons live in the wild, you shouldn't take them out of their habitat, it is like wild dogs, you wouldn't just go and pick one up, it wouldn't be nice if raccoons where us humans and came to pick us humans off out of the wild and said you are my pet. They deserve to be in the wild, and it is the best thing for them
Good luck

You're a little young to be getting sucked into all this "save the animals" mumble-jumbo. There's enough starving, dying people out there to worry about. Animals don't even have souls. Save yourself some time and effort, worry about what really matters, not some creature.
Im not sure, and unlike the first post i think animals are in dire need just as much as we are, see WE caused there problems, not themselves, so i think we should help fix OUR mistake
and a raccoon can not simply be raised as a pet like a dog or cat, see domestication takes many generations, and as mentioned earlier the domesticated animal is different this is wild counterpart, like with the silver foxes, they selected the nicest and tamest animals from fur farms, and breed them, then they took the nicest baby's from those foxes and breed them. It has taken about 50 years to mostly domesticate a line of silver foxes.

And you cant just raise a raccoon to be like a normal pet, in a study that was preformed some students form a collage raised a batch of dogs from birth and a batch of wolves, at first the wolf pups where like the dogs, but as they got older they got wilder, there instincts where wild. You can not simply raise a animal to be a pet.
But i am all for trying to save the animals, such as raccoons which many see as pests. If you find a orphan raccoon i would HIGHLY suggest trying to take care of it, you do not have to worry about sicknesses from baby's because if it had one it would be dead already, but when its older its best to release it back to the wild, and if you do not you will have lots of bills and stolen items because raccoons are insanely smart and have hands.
hope this helps in some weird way!: D
