When I was 13-14 years old I was spending my holiday in the country side with my grandparents. They had a small farm with few mares and they were raising and selling colts.
I remember that there was a vet lady visiting from time to time. She was very funny and I liked helping her and spending time together when she was there because the majority of the people in the village were old and I liked talking from time to time with people younger than my grandparents.
I never understood what she was doing sometimes. I asked her once and she joked telling me that she is doing the girls virgin again. While I was holding the tail she was cutting the mare genitals and than sewing up closed the vulva.
What and why was she doing it??
The only thing that I can think of is what is called a Caslick's procedure, where a portion of the vulva is sewn together, not the whole thing closed. This procedure is done to help correct a malformation that would make the mare prone to vaginal/uterine infections. Here is a web site that also talks about it more in-depth, or you can just search caslicks procedure and see what comes up. http://www.associatedcontent .com/article/1508705/the_caslicks_procedure_explained.html? cat=53
