Stick insects are sorta nice, if you like watching sticks. They are illegal to own in certain states though.
If you don't mind hearing your parents and potential dates scream in fear, hissing cockroaches. - I believe you would need a lamp for the cockroaches though. My personal fave is the praying mantis, watching them bite the heads off there helpless victims is great ~! What ever you choose, make sure it's legal to own ~!
i kept a praying mantis once, she was low maintenance and quiet. a small tank is okay for them. they'll eat crickets and other smaller insects . i really enjoyed feeding moths to mine: P
