How much does it cost to breed bunnies ...?

I want to breed rabbits soon but I don't know what I need.

How much does it usually cost ...?

Thanks:)
There's the cost of the breeding stock (the parents), the cost of separate cages for each of them (you can't house the buck and doe together) and a larger cage to wean the litter in is very helpful. Your pregnant and nursing doe will eat a lot more than she did before, too. The litter of babies will eat like termites. So basically the cost of the cages, feed dishes, water bottles, toys and hay and pellets. Costs will vary depending on what this stuff costs where you live. I buy hay by the bale $ 5, not at the pet store. I also buy pellets in 50 lbs. bags, $ 14.

BTW, it is NOT profitable to breed rabbits. You would be very lucky to break even but will more likely lose money.
I agree with Dreamer. There are already hundreds of unwanted rabbits out there. Maybe they were originally those people who bought from breeders, but when they realised said bunny is living on and on (they should live over 10 years) the kids got bored, the family got bored, the rabbit was dumped. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

What we really need is no rabbits bred for a year or two. And all non-show animals neutered. Maybe then we might get somewhere near not having hundreds of individuals taking in unwanted rabbits at their own cost. The rescue where I got mine has over 100 rabbits, plus currently 6 litters of kits from unneutered does, dumped on her doorstep pregnant. The lady that runs it, who is VERY dedicated to the cause of educating people about bunnies, is £ 6000 in debt to the vets for all the shots, neutering and medication for all those rabbits.

Don't breed!
Could really depend on the litter size. First you need a VERY large enclosure, and then you need to worry about cost.

Rabbits can surprisingly cost quite a bit to own, especially when breeding, as they constantly chew to keep their teeth from growing. Honestly, nobody can answer your question properly as it depends on litter size and what you're willing to put into keeping them healthy. Just remember to take into consideration: Food, vet bills, toys, bedding materials (straw, etc.). ONLY breed rabbits if you have knowledge and have researched them properly. Do go into this blind, as that isn't a smart move.

You might want to consider not breeding your rabbits at all, as there are already plenty out there looking for homes as is. I'm not saying that you are not capable, it's just you might want to consider the animals first.
There is never a * rush * to breed rabbits.

If you want to find out more about breeding/raising/showing rabbits - - find a local 4H club or FFA or similar youth group that has rabbit breeders. You can find out a * lot * about the hobby from the kids and parents involved - and maybe discover that there isn't all that big a hurry to become one more rabbit breeder in a field that's pretty well saturated.

I agree with dreamer and catx. If you don't know what the costs are-you are NOT ready to become a breeder.
If you don't know, you shouldn't breed.

There are more rabbits right now than homes for them, people are struggling to give them away for free and failing-why would you want to breed more? And please don't give us the whole "all my friends want one" routine- everybody's friends want a puppy, a kitten, a pony, or a bunny, right up until they actually have to take it home-and then everyone has an excuse and you're left with a dozen animals you have no homes for.
Raising rabbits can be very enjoyable and profitable if you plan well. Before you get into it I strongly suggest you know why you want to raise them. Is it for yourself as pets, to sale as pets or as livestock.? Your reason will have an effect on the cost. But usually the start up cost is the most. If you do not have breeders yet, you want to make sure you have very good ones to use. This can cost up to 100 per rabbit, this would be a very high quality animal. You would need a cage which if you choose to purchase will cost around 30 + dollars. If you want to build one yourself it will be about 15 or so. The food runs in my area about 14 for a 50lb bag. This just gives you a quick peek at the start up but go to this website for more information,. It has a lot more details and will let you know exactly what you need and what to look for.

All you really need is your rabbit hutch and 2 rabbits. Watch them closely and you will probably witness them doing there business. When the "kittens" are born remove the father and make sure there is enough bedding in the hutch and that's it really.: D Have fun
