Our family was driving home at night when we saw this creature crossing the road that looked like a cougar, but it was too dark to tell. (But it was definitely too big to be a bobcat) Could it have been a cougar? If it helps to know, it was spotted near the woods in Connecticut.

I bet it was. If you live in that area keep an eye on small pets ! Your lucky to have seen one1 They are awesome animals!
Its entirely possible. There has been several sightings, and a lot of evidence supporting the possibility that the cats have returned to the state. Hope this helps! (:
