what do you feed a butterfly?

What do you feed a butterfly?
If you caught a butterfly what do you feed it?
do they eat leafs? do they eat bugs?
also how do you give them water?
do you put some water on a little sponge?
answer:
they eat nectar mostly and you dont catch them and try to keep them, they will only die. especially if you dont know any more about them then to think they eat bugs and leaves.

Butterflies use a variety of food sources to sustain them, including such tasty delights as over-ripe fruit and rotting vegetation. If you own an apple, plum, cherry or pear tree, simply allowing fallen fruit to ferment on the ground will create a favorite feeding spot for butterflies.

One inexpensive source of over-ripe fruit is the "fast sale" stand in the produce section of your grocery store; you might even get the produce manager to donate one or two unsaleable pieces of fruit if you explain the purpose.

Save extra bananas in the freezer - the skin will turn black and unsightly, but the mushy fruit that results when you defrost the bananas will delight many butterflies and moths.

We had butterflies in 4th grade. you get a cotton ball and put sugar water in it. also you can put red dye in it. it attracts the butterflies. you can put sticks leaves ETC inside for decor and shelter but its not food.
they will eat small ground up peices of shrimp and when it comes to water you dab it on their wings with a sponge. keep the enviorment heated to a toasty 99
