nervous about getting my first horse?

  Hey Guys!

I am nervous about getting my first horse, i have always been into horses but just started riding a couple months ago. I also work at a stable and help out with washing, feeding, grooming, exercising, taking out to the pastures, cleaning tack , water buckets, food buckets .. etc. I am twelve years old and i am a beginner rider ... almost to intermediate. My instructor has been helping out and teaching me how to take care of them more like mucking stalls ... etc. My parents and friends parents say its about time i get a horse and my instructor says its best to learn to ride on your own. I currently do Western but want to move to Cross country and hunter jumper for English. I mostly want to use the horse for trail riding and lessons then maybe by next summer i will be ready for competitions. I would not be getting the horse for a couple of months ... maybe Christmas to early next spring. Do you think i am rushing this? What should i do to prepare? Should i be afraid about getting my first horse? You have to start somewhere don't you? Please let me know.

Thanks
First of all, you might get a lot more answers in the horses section.

The question is, do YOU think you're rushing it? If you don't feel comfortable with how fast this is moving, you should tell your parent's and instructor. There is nothing wrong with learning to ride on lesson horses, and even using them for shows. If you do want one though, and don't think you're rushing it, it DOES sound like you have a pretty strong support system, and it sounds like you'll have knowledgeable people to help you along the way , so there's really nothing to be scared of. It also sounds like you've been getting solid experience in all aspects of horse care and not just riding. If your parents are willing to get you a horse, I'd say go for it ! It is always fun to have a horse to call your own and brag about at shows:)

Good luck!
