My neighbors have a knack for putting their pet rabbit in the hallway. They leave it in it's cage that only has a blanket, a water bottle and a bell in it. There's no remnants of food in the cage; I've only seen it with a carrot once, and it's blanket is covered in poop. This week, its been out there for two nights straight. It's a very friendly rabbit, and loves my company when I get home from work and visit with it.
I feel so bad for it, as I see this as animal abuse, but I don't know what goes on while I'm not home and watching; how often they feed the rabbit, if they even pay attention to it ... etc (I do work nights, and they're usually in bed when I get home, so I doubt it's much since it's out there during the day as well). There's no food bowl or litter box, or a nest to provide darkness for the rabbit in it's cage.
So, my question is, when I get home tonight and the rabbit is out there still (3 nights in a row), should I ninja it? My money is tight, but at least I know it won't be forgotten, go hungry , or just a novelty pet in my care. I don't want to call the pound either, i'd rather take care of it until I find it a home if it comes down to that.

I'm just torn between deciding if i should adopt it if its out there again tonight, and would love your thoughts!
Thanks!
If it's been put outside in a public area (aka the hallway) then yes I would recommend taking it in. If they get angsty and question it, you can simply say you thought it was abandoned judging by the state of it, the fact it had been dumped in a hallway and that it had no food!
If you do take it and adopt it in, I would recommend a visit to the vet, make sure there's nothing internally wrong and ridiculously expensive needing fixing with it. If it's been shoved in a cage without anything to do and no hay it could well have serious dental problems (bunnies must have 24/7 access to hay, it keeps their back teeth worn down), and it may well need its nails clipping too.
Bunnies aren't cheap pets, if it did have dental problems costs can seriously mount up. If you're not sure you can afford it, you could take it in to an SPCA vet as a stray and see what the costs are before you commit to anything.
I recommend calling an animal shelter because if they know you have taken it, you can get done for theft. (Silly I know but the law sucks)

If they think it's in bad enough condition they'll take it then they can adopt it out to someone who will actually take care of it.
I'm with ya. Why do people have pets that they don't want to take care of?!? Do something before that poor thing dies. You shouldn't feel guilty. You're not doing it with bad intentions. Just make sure it gets a good home. Someone who will play/feed/love that adorable animal. Best of luck.
Be sneaky like a ninja and don't get caught!!:)
Take the rabbit before it dies!! If you think you should do it then do it. If he dies, you might feel that it was your fault for not taking it so go ninja and do it!!!
YES HIGHJACK IT ~ ~ AND GET A GUN IF THEY HEAR U AND TELL THEM THAT U WILL KILL SHOT THEM !!!!!
Be like a ninja!
If it dies, you'll feel like you should have. SAVE PETER !!!!!
Of course, the sooner the better! Give it a cool fresh bowl of water every day, rabbitfood from the store, fesh vegetables a soft darkplace to sleep and plenty or love. I despise humans who mistreat animals and what I would like to do to their children cannot be said on the net because that is who they are closest to and would hurt them the most as they have hurt that rabbit
I say go for it-just make sure there are no cameras and you do it quietly-ideally you would leave the cage and and just somehow make it look like he got out of the cage on his own and that he then ran out of the building or something. Meanwhile keep him in your bathroom and have a good place to stash him if the apartment gets searched. I guess that is highly unlikely in a rabbit napping though. Just don't let your neighbors catch you bringing in any rabbit supplies after that.
As much as I might feel bad about them losing a pet, it's better than letting it waste away due to mistreatment. I've gotten my fair share of animals deposited in boxes at the doors of my pet shop early in the morning. I'm sure there were other people willing and able to look after them, but just never made the effort. Then I have to foot the bill to look after them, and try and sell them to someone else later. If you can beat that system and grab it straight away, I suggest you do so.

It's pretty inexpensive to keep a rabbit, and if you can manage to get the basics you need second hand online, then you might find you total costs are like $ 5 a week. Sounds like you've got it's interests at heart, so I ' d say it's best off with you, regardless of what else might be going on with it. Just be sure it's what you want. Regards,
If you just take it you could end up with more trouble than it is worth and the rabbit could end up back with them. It would be seen as stealing. If you would like to rescue it and rehome it you could talk to them if they are willing to let you have it or if you don't feel you can do that call your local animal humane society who can come and check out the rabbit and the way it is keep and if needed can remove the rabbit.
