Ive been going around online and shelters and puppies for sale for a week. Puppies for sale are usually around 200-500 bucks already spayd/neutrd shots etc. And shelters usually from 60-100 bucks which is suppose to cover shots/and all the others stuff they did. Well how come when i got my pet from a shelter, i payed the 85 bucks but the pet wasnt spayed so i couldnt take it home yet until it was, so i have to meet the shelter person at some vet for pre exam and blah blah, then i'd have to pay 161 bucks which includes appt. surgery etc. so thats 245 + dollars total to get this mix puppy. Thats how much ud spend on some (some!) pure breeds out there already spayd/neutrd. Is this how its suppose to be?
That sounds a little strange. Most shelters will have the pet fixed, and the pre-adoption exam by a vet is included in the fee, which shouldn't be more than $ 100 total. Most people usually take their new pet to a vet within the first year of adopting, which is when the new vaccines are given (and that usually is around $ 100 +).
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com They should not be charging you full price for the surgery. The whole purpose of a shelter is that they fix the animals asap once they arrive, and make sure they are healthy and ready to be adopted out. I have never heard of a reputable shelter charging that much for an animal, unless it has additional health problems that have to be fixed through surgery. You should ask them to justify the cost and print out the fees from other shelters so they know you are aware that their price is too high.
It really depends on where you live and the shelter you go to. At the shelter by me I have not seen any adoption fee higher than $ 250 and that's for puppies. The adoption cost is usually $ 150 or less. They don't have the money to spay and neuter but they give you $ 50 to go towards a spay/neuter. $ 245 is really not that bad to adopt a puppy. They cost a lot more at pet stores and from breeders.
It sucks a lot if the shelter told you a different price than what they actually expected you to pay. Dishonest shelters like that give the whole adoption process, which is normally lovely, a bad name. It is normal (at least where I live) to pay $ 100 - $ 250 for a shelter dog (already neutered, shots, free vet appt, etc), but you adopt instead of buying a purebred for a totally different reason than money, which it sounds like you totally understand.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Good luck with your new puppy!
Yeah, but it all depends where you go! Good luck:)
I used to volunteer with a shelter that charged about that then required people to get the dog spayed. The reason, the county didn't give them any money and they where a rural wis shelter, who could barely keep there doors opened. on top of everything they where a no kill and I was there only volunteer, who wasn't on the board. the rest was paid staff.
fast forward to my life now I'm volunteering with a shelter right outside of NYC, the adoption fee is about 295, dog comes fixed they have more volunteer then tehy know what to do with. but every fee they get helps keep them running.
no real breed is going to charge you less then 500 ... most of the time it's closer to a 1000 or crazy people like me who like the rare ones, it's closer to 2000 (the reason I don't have a dog). the reason, gens. it's expensive to have a show dog. you think that pure breed award winning dog just happens? its time managing lines breeding out bad traces and keeping teh old ones. make sure teh dog has a the right temperament. picking out the right dog that's going to win the awards .... your paying for the time.

you've been looking at backyard breeders or mill dogs they are the people who don't know what they are doing and just willy nilly breed them. they well charge a lot less and you get what you have paid for.
not really. a breeder will not let a puppy go for less than 500 bucks already spayed and neuterd! iddk where your at. you have to be considerate these dogs are RESCUED FROM BAD SITUATIONS, SPAYED/NEUTERD, GIVEN TO YOU COMPLETLY HEALTHY, WITH ALL THEIR SHOTS, Most of the time potty trained. and save you all the money and time of when they were sick and pooped everywhere so of course theyre going to charge you differently for every dog. a breeder who breeds for business just gets money out of it. rescue groups ask for money to support other dogs that are coming in sick. you just need to think and go to the right place.
It's a lot more expensive than you think to care for a shelter animal. The rescue I volunteered with didn't have a shelter facility. they had to pay $ 40 to the pound for every dog they saved from death. Those dogs often had health issues that needed to be addressed. They also often required spay/neuter which was not offered to them at a discount, so that procedure was at least $ 200 per dog. Then you have the cost of dog food for the duration of the time the dog was in rescue. Also, if a foster home was not immediately available, they would have to pay boarding fees to house the dog. If the dog is in rescue for more than a month, they obviously cost a lot more than what the rescue recoups from the adoption fee. I wouldn't look at it as getting an inferior dog for almost as much money, Look at it for what it is, you're saving a dog's life, and giving him a better life than the one he had before. I'm glad you're rescuing!
