What do i need to know before I get a Steer??? What kind? What do i need? EVERTHING!!! The best answer GUARENTED!!! And how many can i have in 5 1/2 acres, very green grass few smalll trees
1 - plenty of sweet feed (he will go through a lot)
2 - a mineral block with de wormer in it
3 - a salt lick
4 - a round bale of hay
5 - a couple of bags of loose alfalfa (No cubes)
6 - cow de wormer
7 - a vet (shots, hoof care)
8 - a shelter for him
9 - brush, bucket (for cleaning)
10 - scoop for food and a large bucket to carry food in
11 - water trough and food trough (under a cover of some sort.)
12 - a harness for his head (easier holding)
13 - some sort of lead (to walk him where you want him)
Get him used to being handled, be moved or walked. Give him lots of attention and know that they can learn a few commands. Cattle, horses aand goats all need basically the same things. You might want to get a bag of apple treats too . They love them.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Good Luck
i would recommend one of the miniature breeds like a dexter. They are friendly, safe because of the small size and they are very cute. They don't need as much feed as other large ones do and less space.
http://www.dextercattle.org/ http://www.hobbyfarms.com/farm-breeds/ot ... the steer would be a lot happier with another one. if you got a small breed you could have space for 2. in order to keep it from eating all the grass fence off each acre. you can use portable electric fencing or permeant types. each couple days rotate the cow to a new acre. instead of the steer eating it down to the dirt it will fertilize it and make the grass better. you need hay, and grain to feed in the winter. also a shed for shelter from cold and rainy weather and stock tank for water.
are you raising it for meat or a pet? if its a pet i would recommend a donkey or a goat which is more friendly and affectionate. also dairy breeds of cattle tend to be less aggressive, available and a lot cheaper then the beef breeds. a Holstein, guernsey, or brown swiss are good choice although don't go with a jersey (tends to be aggressive).
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com you will want a good livestock vet.
