young filly rearing in the corral?

Hello, We have just bought a 17 month old filly and with the previous owners she seemed really sweet. Over the last week her attitude has been increasingly disturbing. When she is on the halter, she behaves really well; leads great, good with her feet, ties well. Unfortunately, when I go in the corral with her, she walks towards me like she is being friendly, and then just before she gets to me she puts her ears back, turns her head and then rears. She hasn ' t come at me (yet) with her front legs and doesn't seem to be mean. I have read loads on the internet about hitting her in the chest, not hitting her, yelling at her, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions please . I stand my ground with her and try not to let her get away with it. We've only had her a week, so I'd like to try and solve this obviously as soon as possible. The previous owners have said she was bottle fed from 2 months old, her mother coming off a reserve but was too nasty to work with. They said the best thing they thought they could do for the young filly's future was to separate the pair. Do bottle fed horses have a tendency to have more attitude?

Thanks so much for any help you can offer.
Bottle fed horses are a PITA as they have no knowledge of equine behaviour.

What Jaice says is very harsh and Sandy hasn't a clue.

The best thing you could do is to turn her out with another older horse that will put manners on her and when you go to catch her it seems you have warning of when she is going to rear. You have to be quick but I would have the halter ready or a longish whip and the moment she goes up you use either on her back legs. As she is standing on them this is attacking her security and she should think twice about doing it again.

The whack needs to be hard enough that she thinks 'Ouch' but not hard enough to do any damage.

Be careful as she might spin away from you and lash out.

Make sure that you are not overfeeding her hard food, this can make them turn silly.
Hi, i train horses for a living & i'll tell you the best way to fix that ... it may sound harsh & ; others might not agree with it but i've had several colts do that and my dad trains horses as well and he taught me to take a rope or a long stiff whip and when they do that whack them over the head hard a couple times and after a couple times they will learn that you're in charge. and also bottle fed horses do tend to have more of an attitude because they are like a spoiled child in many ways. hope this helps! also make sure you love on her if she stops rearing because then she'll realize if she doesn't do it then she gets loved on.
i would take a lunge whip out to the corral with you, if she pins her ears at you chase her away with the whip but DON'T HIT HER unless just snapping the whip isn't working then tap her on the but with it.

Keep chasing her away until she shows signs of wanting to join "your herd" (lowering her head, licking and chewing etc.) This way she knows she is in YOUR herd and you aren't in her herd

Once she shows these signs drop the whip and let her come to you, if she pins her ears chase her away again and keep doing this till she will walk up to you without pinning her ears

once she has come to you put her halter on then pet her and give her treats, just give her tons of praise

then just let her go, that's all you will do with her for the day

keep doing this day after day until she walks up to you the first time without pinning her ears, only then can you take her out and mess around with her

hope this helps
do not ever hit your horse any were on the head, this will make them head shy and you will not be able to put a headset on them to ride so absalutly no hitting.

if you have only had the horse a week than he is still getting use to his surrounding. you do not want to do to much with him to fast or you will ruin him. you need to just walk him around the outside of the coral and show him that the coral will not harm him. also you can tie him to the outside of the coral and allow him to watch you walk in and just walk around inside the coral and let him see that you are in there and not beeing harmed. also h could have been in a coral before and been abused do you might have to work with him.also do not use the coral for just work. you need to take time and feed him in the coral, bath him in the coral, leave the gate open to allow him to walk in and out when he wants so he can get use to it. if the only thing you do is work him in the coral than he will never want to go in.

battel feed horses are better with humans than non bottel feed horses just because bottel feed horses are always around humans and they get used to him

so just allow your horse to see that the coral will not harm you or him, you can lead him in with a bucket of feed if you have to qand just let him see that it is ok. if you use force with your horse than he will resent you and look at you as a preteter that will harm him and he will get to were he wont come to you.
