i would like to get a preying mantis and i have done my research about it - but i don't know when to feed it.
should i feed it every day or what??
flies - is that good enough too??

I wouldn't feed it everyday. When I've had mantis' in the shop I fed them every other day, but had to spend more time making sure the enclosures were warm and slightly humid. Even then they didn't always eat right away. I also fed them in the early afternoon when light was at it's peak, and they'd been lightly sprayed with warm conditioned water an hour or so earlier.
Flies should be just fine, but you should keep in mind you really don't know what the flies you catch have been up to. I know in the wild they catch and eat all sorts of nasty stuff, but I like to make sure I know what I'm getting myself into. For that reason I fed mine crickets that had a proper and nutritious gutload. I suppose if you were set on feeding them flies, you could occaisionally supplement the diet with gut loaded crickets to make sure they get the proper range of nutrients. I fed mine crickets and other bugs. i always had 1 or 2 bugs in the cage all the time.
