My bunny for some reason likes to pee in the plastic bed pan of his cage and now its stained. I've tried scrubbing with soap and hot water and so on but nothings working. Any suggestions?
It's true that the rabbit urine will actually burn into the plastic of the cage. You won't be able to get rid of the marks that are present, but can just use a bleach solution to make sure it's as clean as possible. There are some specialty cage cleaners for small animal urine, but if it's really burned into the plastic, it probably won't be able to make a serious difference.
Now, if you're dead set on getting rid of that mark in the plastic, you might find that you need to scrape a thin layer of the plastic off to expose the unburned plastic underneath. That usually involves scrubbing with a steel wool or really rough brush and super hot water. I wouldn't recommend doing that though, because the same thing will happen the next time your rabbit goes. If possible, put a layer in between the plastic and where you rabbit goes to the washroom so that the strongest chemical effects are absorbed before it makes contact. Hope that helps you out some. Regards,
It won't come out. Small animal urine is extremely caustic, it will actually "burn" or erode plastic and metal that it comes in contact with. Plastic will turn a white or rusty color and feel like it's rough and raised, but it's not really pee anymore, it's just basically a burn mark. Just bleach it and it's clean, regardless of what it looks like.
Soak in hot water with Bleach. Put the plastic in the sun for a few days. Then wash it again. Repeat process as needed.
