Well, I have severe depression, and I have a dog. However, he doesn't like me very much, I've tried everything, walking him, playing with him, feeding him, everything. Yet, he still doesn't like me at all. So I'm thinking, that if I get a kitten or a puppy or something that actually/likes/me, that I'd be slightly bit happier, as I do love animals.
What do you think?
I think not. If your current dog has not bonded with you, what makes you think a new puppy or kitten would bond with you? Animals feed off our emotions-if you're depressed, they aren 't going to want to be around you. That's probably why your current dog doesn't want to show you affection, and it'll likely happen with a new pet as well. Talk with your doctor about a change in medication, or talk therapy. And if you like animals, consider volunteering at your local shelter. Giving your time for a worthy cause can make you feel better about yourself, it'll get you out of your home and interacting with society, plus you'd get to spend time with a wide variety of different animals.
My two pets help with my depression A LOT.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com If you go to a pet store, make sure you spend time with the animal to see their personality.
I got a kitten about a month ago, and she is the most cuddly, sweetest thing ever.
I also have another cat, who's kind of mean, but she still snuggles with me and shows me that she loves me.
And then my dog, he is the most loyal, best dog on the Earth. English Springer Spaniels are VERY loyal dogs, and they're great when it comes to loving their owners. I'd suggest them.
Oh, and my one cat is a calico, and the kitten is a Snowshoe, which is a rare breed so it'd be hard to find.
I first want to point out that i am no dr. And by no means am i an expert on the subject of depression. i am medicated for depression, as i take cymbalta every morning for depression. but i own 3 chins and a sugar glider. they make my life wonderful. i couldnt imagine my life without them. when i am feeling sad, i let me chins out to play and they cheer me right up. so in my OPINION, yes animals help with depression.
i was depressed then i got some more pets and then i was all good again: )
i heard that if you have a pet that makes you happy, it will keep you happy and it will make you live a couple years longer
Animals * can * be an aid through depression but definitely not a solution. If you want to talk or need any help feel free to email me at lilkittykat_1991@hotmail.com

Yeah dogs will help depression. Remember that episode of Friends where Joey was depressed over Rachel, so Phoebe brought over the world's happiest dog?
In theory yes animals do help with depression
yes
some people
with you, see a doctor and get pills
Yes, animals can help with depression.
However, being depressed should NOT be your only reason for getting a puppy or kitten. What if, in your case, it doesn't help? Then what? Is it going to just be cast aside? Given away? Recieve an adequate amount of love and care?
Maybe continue to work with your current dog. I understand the feeling of thinking an animal doesn't like you. It just takes time and patience. Older dogs may not be as loving as new puppies, but they can be with time.
If you can come up with more than the single reason for getting a new animal, perhaps you should go for it. But realize, you need to thouroughly research this animal first. Know everything about it and its care. Make sure you have the time , space, and money for it. Animals are a huge responsibility. Its like having a child that will never fully grow up, and doesn't live as long. Its something that relies totally on you for care. They love you unconditionally in return . These reasons are why they can be good for someone whos depressed. Give them the sense of responsibility, love and care, ect. But you must be willing to do all those things in order to get that love.

And maybe you should discuss your pills with your doctor .. If they aren't working, and you aren't seeing a noticeable difference in your mood and behavior from the medication .. Then perhaps you need a different dose or a different medication all together. Discussing this with your doctor is just another thing that'll help get you on the right track. Trust me. I went through all that crap in Jr. High/HS.
