I have heard that the stallion leads the herd, but a book told me today that one of the mares really is the one to lead the herds. The stallion is apparently still there, but the mare does most of the work. Is this true?
Stallions lead all - may be alpha mare .... who leads the females (male stallion is often on look out) ... BTW our wild mustangs are being killed by BLM (Bureau of Land Management ).... get involved if you really care (as I do) ... (driven over miles by helicopter - starved, run to death, all for gas pipeline (cattle) in wild west - so much land there is enough for a few hundred wild ( last of) horses.
Like lions - main female and they do all the hunting but when threatened ... the male is there!
