I noticed my goat lost quiet a bit of weight and has diarrhea? Does anyone know why this would happen or what is wrong? What can I do to help him and make him feel better? Just started giving grain today and he eats is fine and also drinks fine, I've noticed his hind being messy and just recently put our goats in for the winter and want to help him.
Thank you. God bless!
Lots of things could cause diarrhea in goats .. infections, parasites, stress, diet issues .. a change in feeding habits, which could be the move from all pasture and forage to grain, could even cause it. The cause doesn't necessarily have to be something you have lying around. Coccidia, for example, are naturally occurring parasites found in the soil. They cause coccidiosis, which in turn can cause diarrhea (not always, but it can) , which is treatable with a quick course of medication.
You can get an idea of whether it's an infection by checking his temperature, if you can do that. Normal temperatures for goats run from about 101 to 103.5. He's certainly not going to hold a thermometer under his tongue though, so good luck .. . I know this is something I would prefer to let the vet do:)
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Personally, I wouldn't take a chance. Give your vet a call - goats can go downhill too quickly to risk it. And in the meantime, make sure he stays hydrated, and isolate him as much as possible from your other animals. It may not be contagious and it may not even be a serious problem, but why take the chance, right?
I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your goat! I know we would be heartbroken if something happened to ours : (
If you have any others, please have the vet take a culture and try and figure out what happened .. if it's contagious, that may be the step that saves others in your herd!
