Does it take a while? Do they bond like rabbits? If a male and a female have babies will the male be okay with the babies?
Always buy rats in pairs. 2 males or 2 females. If you already have 2 rats and you want more, they can be introduced, but do it slowly. i just recently put my 4 5 week old male rats in with my 2 8 month old male rats. lots of things ive read say if a male rat is older than 6 months, then you cant add anymore rats because they will kill them. well my baby rats love my older rats and vice versa, i even caught all 6 rats asleep in 1 hammock.
Rats are highly social animals that MUST be kept in same sex pairs or groups. A male should not be kept in with a female and her babies as he can get her pregnant again as soon as she gives birth. Obviously a back to back pregnancy would be very stressful for the female. Furthermore, there is a lot more to responsible breeding than just putting a male and a female together. Please don't get a male and a female and breed your rats.

Rats need to be in pairs. Do not get a male and a female. They will have litter after litter which is very hard on the females body and there are tons of rats in shelters waiting to be adopted. If you want lots of rats, adopt a bunch of same sex rats if you have the space and can afford it.
It usually does not take a long time. It took my rats a day to bond. They will usually just get along. They are way easier to bond than rabbits.
Rats NEED other rats. They're one of the most social animals kept as pets. Please don't breed your rat-it's hard on the female and there are enough rats in rescues as is.
