I hear people leave their ferrets out at night, but i don't trust it since i'm scared she will get into some trouble. It does sound an awful long time for the ferret to be alone.
Ferrets should have a minimum of 4-6 hours a day out of cage time. This is better done in more than one session unless they are out for a longer stretch.
They are bored very easily and need lots of different toys and mental stimulation like the ones suggested as well as dig boxes with dirt, Bags full of shredded paper, Cardboard boxes, Flexible black plastic drainage tubes sre about $ 5 for a 12 foot section. Get 2 and cut one into 3 smaller lengths. It is amazing how much fun they will have with these.

I would not leave a ferret out for any length of time unsupervised. They can get into all sorts of trouble while you're watching them, I'd hate to think of what they could get into with no one there.
As for how long, I usually let mine out and let them run themselves down ... mine usually go back into the cage on their own when they get tired. It's usually between 1-2 hours a day. If they stay out for 30 minutes to an hour I'll usually let them back out a few hours later, once they wake up and are ready to play again.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com If you do get them a pen like the other poster suggested, be aware that dog pens can be climbed by your ferret ... it would have to be something that they could not jump over or climb.
A ferret should have 4 hours out of cage time a day.
I prefer to do 2 hours when I get ready for work everyday and then 2 hours at night when I am relaxing.
NEVER let a ferret out unsupervised if it's in an un-ferret-proofed area. You are right, ferrets can get into a lot of trouble if you are not watching them. So, you can either have an environment that's free of anything that they could get into trouble with or always supervise them.
Personally, I don't think throwing a ferret in a play pen counts for 'out of cage time' ... the most important thing about out of cage time is interaction with their owners and new environments for them to play in. Putting them in a play pen is kinda like having a second cage, but it is good for when there's company over or if you are busy and can't keep an eye on them.
I would not leave it out a long time unsupervised. I would only leave it out when you are at home.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com We found a pen online that you can set up and let them run around. Put in some tubes and boxes to hide in, a small can of trash to dump over and play with, and other odds and ends. Don't buy expensive toys - they are not interested.
I leave my ferret out all day. She has roam of the house. You MUST ferret proof your home in order to do this. Make sure you block stairs, water based heaters are covered, old fashioned heaters make sure the holes are covered, make sure they don't have access to the stove. Good luck!
