I just want to know what is the best feed to use for my horse to encourage the safest, fastest, most inexpensive weight gain possible. My horse is 6 yrs old, and has nevr gained weight properly, but right now she is really skinny, and I would like to start adding something to her current feed ... happy trails, and sport ... I was thinking beet pulp, or rice bran. Which one is betr or is there something else I could look into? Please list where I could find what I need as well.
Please any weight gain suggestions are welcome ... Yes I have had a horse vet see her, and her teeth are fine, Plus we just updated her worm medicine so its not that. I just want to find something I could do to help her asap. Thnx guys <3
This would be a great thing to discuss in depth with your vet. I know you said she has seen a vet, but a qualified veterinarian would have much better info for you than most of the people here (myself included, i'll admit!).
I have no experience with rice bran, so I can't say yay or nay for that; however, I have fed beet pulp to elderly horses with GREAT success. One 30 + horse right now is getting beet pulp, alfalfa cubes and senior feed soaked into a warm mash. She maintains weight all through the harsh midwestern winters here. If you do choose to use beet pulp, be sure to soak it well so that it does not swell inside your horse.

I also know of people who add a little corn oil or BOSS (black oil sunflower seeds, yes like birdfood) to help with weight gain and for a shinier coat. This could be something you might want to check into. Lots and lots of hay is also great - free choice if possible. And if she is fed with other horses, make sure she is getting her fill.
Make sure that she is blanketed if necessary this winter so she doesn't lose weight trying to keep warm.
Do a google search on this topic and you will come up with a lot of info that you can take to your vet for advice. And good for you for staying on top of your horses health! I see a lot of people who just ignore skinny horses ...
EDIT: forgot to add; no corn isn't the best for horses. A little won't hurt them, but it is not what horses need for gaining weight and can cause more problems than good. I would find a better option.
give bran, rice based feeds, barley (crushed, steamed or boiled) etc. ask your local supplier (saddlery shop or wherever you buy feed from) which feeds they have in stock that are good for weightgain
did your vet say anything about her weight
