I have been trail riding for the last year or soo .. and i am thinking about trying a new type of riding ,....
I have a lease horse and don't want to give her up ... so i just want to try a different type of riding? ... Is that ok .... i am still gonna trail ride and do 4-h but what is a good fun kind of english riding??? Jumper ... hunter .... what do u do in each kind of english??? thanks for answering .....:)
"Saddleseat action "requires lots of artificial" training ", involving excessively long, unbalanced hooves, weighted shoes, big bits, rider sitting behind the action, and frequently even more abusive methods such as soring the hooves, ginger paste in the anus, wieghted rollers and chains on the pasterns, breaking the tailbone, keeping a horse stalled wearing a tailset rig, and lots of other really * nice * things. But, hey, it's FUN, so to hell with the horse, eh?
Yes, there are some abusers in every facet of showing, trail riding, rodeo, driving, etc. BUT - Most of the "saddleseat action" show classes are impossible to place in, without taking these extreme measures.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com In answer to your question, jumping is literally a thrill ride! Within the spectrum of jumping there are lots of options - cross country (my favorite, at low levels), stadium, hunter, hunter/jumper, and I don't know what else. There's something about the sensation of being airborne with your equine partner that is unmatched.
Classical dressage is a different kind of thrill - the thrill of developing a fine, subtle communication that allows youandyourhorse to function as one being, performing intricate maneuvers with nearly invisible aids. Modern competitive dressage is another story - you can see a lot of abusive riding even in the highest levels, with horses' faces cranked back to their knees, heavy on the forehand and on the bit.
Polo players are the cowboys of English riding. For the most part, they're more interested in getting the job done (winning the match) than in treating their horses kindly. Strong bits, spurs, kick to go/pull to stop horsemanship. Jump on one, ride him hard, tie him to the trailer with no cooling out and swap him for the next one, repeat, several times per match. I guess it's pretty exciting to ride, but I strongly suggest that anyone build some solid classical dressage skills and habits before starting on the fast and crazy stuff.

Finally, I've found a good all-purpose English saddle to be infinitely more comfortable for trail riding than most western saddles. The westerns tend to have a wide, flat seat that feels like sitting on a pool table, to me.
them's my 'pinyuns' bout English ridin'...
if you dont want to give your horse up but try riding her english i would ask her owner if she has ever been ridden english. if she has i would advise just trying her with an all purpose saddle and test out walking/trotting/cantering with the new saddle. if you enjoy it you could try some poles and learn basic jumps as they can be fun and wont interfere with your 4-H and trail riding. have fun with it!:)
Jumper: Basically it's barrels on horseback, lol. You have, lets say, ten jumps set up, and each jump is numbered, and you go through going as fast as you can trying to get the least number of faults. There's moer to it, but that's the rundown.
Hunters: You're being judged on form, riding, lead changes, etc. No timing on this one. You can go as slow as you need to, but you have to obey the pattern.

And don't listen to that Bliss person. Just because SOME people that do Saddleseat treat their horses like that, doesn't mean they all do. Some western pleasure people tie their horses heads up for hours until they get tired and just don ' t pick their heads up. But again, doesn't mean they all do it. Don't let one person's opinion influence you.
Good luck!
I have done hunters, jumpers, eq, english, etc ... My personal favorite is hunters. English is suuper fun! Hunters are based more on looks and keeping a steady step between the fences (gett the right amount of strides). Jumpers is for speed without knocking down the poles. If you don't plan on showing, then you won't need to worry so much about the difference. But most people start with hunters. The courses are a lot easier!
Of course it's okay to start a new type of riding!! That's how you get better! My vote is you try hunters. They are a blast and give you a rush cause it's something new!
Well I have done saddleseat all my life which is wonderful but if you are looking to jump or do eventing then saddleseat isn't for you. It is only groundwork (yeah that's the down side) but it is very fun when you have a horse with a lot of action. You should look it up and try it out.
I like hunter-jumper which is just going around a course and jump which is more fun to me than Jumpers because jumper is usually a time-event in which you and your horse jump the course as fast as you can.
DO EVENTING IT IS SOOOOOO MUCH FUN! haha i did hunters for 3 years and got bored, jumpers is alot of fun too:) good luck!!
