Title is self descriptive.:)
I have the helmet below. I like it .. it's not huge and bulky, and does the job well. I like the GPS 2 system to adjust the fit better.

Whatever type of helmet you get, I recommend the ATM/SEI certified helmets like Troxel sells. I really the" Sport " ; - it's inexpensive, durable (I have had mine for around 4 years), and lightweight.

Its cost is around $ 30 - 40.
About the helmets age ... I've not experienced any serious fall in the past few years so I haven't needed to replace it, but if you do have a fall which impacts the helmet, you should replace it.
Have fun and be safe.
Helmuts are all pretty much the same. ALl the fancy brands don't actually protect your head much better if at all, than any other ASTM/SEI certified helmet. I would go for something cheap but certified because if its cheap you are more likely to replace it when you fall, which is the only way to be sure that its still safe. That said, I almost never replace my helmet-has to crack first ....
I like the Troxel Spirit for all-purpose use. It meets all safety standards, is lightweight, adjustable, and it's only about $ 30. My son has had a couple and I used to use one. My new helmet is a Tipperary Sportage, which I like even better but it was about $ 60.
If you just need a simple helmet for pleasure or trail, I would personally go with Tipperary, or if that fails, IRH. I hate Troxel helmets, they never hold up well.
