Was doing some work with my mare a couple days ago, and noticed that her front right fetlock was slightly swollen. It did not bother her in the least, and was not hot at all, so I proceeded to give her a workout, with a slightly eased up pace and lightened workload. Afterwords, I let her cool and checked it again. Still slightly swollen, and every so slightly hot. Still does not bother her in the least! We are in Canada, and it is very slippery at the moment. Could it just be from a small slip? I considered icing it, but it's so cold out anyways ....
Another thing to consider is an abscess; one that you don't see until it blows. And mares especially can be very stoic when it comes to their feet. Hiding their pain so as to not let on they are easy pickings for predators. I would let her rest for a couple days. If she is still stocked up 48 hours from now call the vet.
You should not be riding the mare. Swelling means there is an injury, which may be a minor ligament sprain or other issue, but can worsen if she isn't rested. Absence of lameness doesn't necessarily mean an injury won't require long term rest and treatment. I would at least phone an equine vet asap for advice and go from there.
Get a vet.
