Quick question about Bute?

How long does it take to take effect?

How long does it last?
It depends on the dosage, the route in which it's given, the ailment, and the horse itself.

In an average situation, most vets will give 2 grams at once for the first few doses to boost the amount in the horses body initially, and then they maintain the horse on a smaller dosage.

The effects are supposed to last for 24 hours, but it is recommended to split the dosage and give it at least twice a day for the best results. How long it really last ...? It's hard to say, but you can test for it and find traces of it in their system for up to 5 days after the last dose.
The typical dose is about 2 grams per day, can be split and given half every 12 hours. higher doses do not help more but increase the side effects.

When give oraly it will take effect in about two hours and will peak about 12 hours and will last 24 to 3 6 hours.

Long term use can cause gastric ulsers and kidney damage which will be amplified if the horse is dehydrated.
I think it depends on the horse as humans have a tolerance to drugs so do horses my stallion is what we call a cheap drunk half a dose of bute and hes off with the fairys in a couple of minutes for at least four hrs but my mare it takes a good dose and dont work for at least an hour and only lasts for about hour and half
its usually kicks in the first hour and lasts up to 3 days, but you need to re-give the dosage every day. although if using it long term the it can be bad for the horse xx
My vet usually advises me to give a dose two hours before it's going to be needed and to anticipate it will be good for at least 12 hours.
for a horse usually kicks in in the first hour and last up in till next dosage.
