Help with some horse costs please?
hi,
i just turne 17 and am looking at getting my first horse.
I am only a beginner and havent ridden a great deal (6 or 7 times) however i am volunteering at a riding school and learning alot!
i do plan on getting lessons before i buy one to ensure that i know how to ride properly.
my step father grew up with horses of his own and knows what he is doing and would be there to help. the horse would also be agisted so the staff at the property are always there to help and they take care of worming, vaccinations, farrier, vet checks etc.
i dont want to show or anything, i just want a really quiet trail horse to be ridden every weekend.
anyway, what im wondering is what sort of horse would be best and roughly how much would it be?
I know that they are VERY expensive (however they are beautiful animals and its all worth it.) Also, how much roughly a week would they be to maintain? pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
Thankyou
you need to speak with your step father.
no one here even knows where you are, so who knows what the cost of horses are in your area ???
look up in ads in your area, go to the tack shops and look at the flyers people post about their horses for sale. go to the nearby barns and ask around about horses for sale.
you can end up getting a free horse that used to be a lesson horse for beginners....you might end up paying $3,000 on up to ???
no one knows. you've got to look for yourself in your own area.
same answer for how much will it cost per month....go to your local barns and talk to the barn owners.
you can pay $100 or you can pay $1000 a month. it depends on your area.
I know this isn't exactly the response you were hoping for, but being a total beginner, you need to learn the first rule of horse ownership....your area = how much you pay for eveything.
it's not something you can learn from anyone off the internet.
it depends on you area. but these are my costs for southern cali at a normal non show stable pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
Board: $300(monthly)
Shots: 300 twice a year
Floating: 200 when needed
Shoes: 85 for only front shoes
suplements: about 60 everytime we get them which is about a month or two
horse itslef: free
now the costs go up when he gets injured or sick.
I also have one that was 500 but i selling her back to where she came from.

You should lease a horse if you will only be riding on the weekend
I have no idea what the horse market is like in Australia, but I know that right now where I live, I can't even sell my super athletic Hanoverian mare, great jumper and dressage horse that I used for eventing (one in my pic), for a decent amount of money.
If it helps... we just got a vet bill for over 700$ for two pre-purchase checks on two different horses... yeah, horses are expensive and there are way more hidden costs than what there appears to be, even a quiet trail horse comes with expenses.
