Your favorite/ best working hoof supplements?
I'm looking for hoof supplements for my horse. I was recommended a brand that had "gold" in it.. neither of us can remember, do you know what brand we're talking about, hoof gold maybe? Anyway, I need something with Biotin in it. My horses feet won't grow, and he has little hoof wall. He only gets lame after I work him hard. My horses are on break for three months, and this would be a good time to supplement him with light round pen work. If the supplements don't help, I will move to xrays and a vet check. Thank you (:
answer: The one with the most research behind it is Farrier's Formula from Life Data Labs. Buy the double strength- you feed half and much, but it doesn't cost twice as much. I also really like Med-Vet's Biotin 22X and Kaeco's Biotin 800Z. I recommend a pellet, so you know they are eating it, and it can be fed alone if you are not feeding grain. Look for a broad spectrum supplement containing zinc and amino acids, not one that just has biotin in it. Some horses will respond to straight biotin, but they are in the minority. Just remember it takes quite a while to see results. The supplement will affect new growth only. The hoof wall that is on your horse currently will not be affected, so don't give up after 4-6 months.

Lori has it right. If your horses feet are kept in balance and the the horse is on the correct terrain-as long as it has no other underlying health problems(then it's feet are the least of your problems and will correct themselves when the underlying problem is corrected) you will never need a supplement for their feet.

Haven't had a shod horse in 20+ years. All sound and in work-some even competing and winning top 10 consistently, barefoot.
Hoofshoers secret is my favorite. My first pony, a little paint mare, had horrible feet. One clubbed foot, constantly got abscesses, was so sensitive she couldn't even wear shoes, and foundered once while we had her. I used hoofshoers secret and she was much less sensitive and grew hoof wall much better. My friend got some for her horse too and its already working, his hooves look wonderful.
http://www.statelinetack.com/item/farnam… i do not know of a good supplement but my horses who used to have bad hooves really show how well rainmaker works. its a hoof conditioner and it does wonders, put it on every day for a week then a few times a week after that and you will be amazed at how the quality of your horse's hooves improve:)
My horse had thin hoof walls. I trim them myself with a natural trim. She will never have another shoe on her feet again. I put pure biotin in her feed everyday, and I go back and forth using rainmaker hoof dressing or fish oil. 10 months later her hooves barefoot, thick walls and solid as a rock.
