What to say to friends who don't think riding is a sport?
I get so angry when people tell me this. To the point in which I am shaking. I stand up, raise my voice and do everything in my will to prove them wrong. But I almost never win. Just because I can never think of what to say to prove them wrong. I can only prove them wrong by putting them on my horse. Which won't happen.
I need some things to say when my friends get like this. LIke points to prove them different. Help?
thanks in advance.
just smile and tell them to try it
I think it's more important that you work on the reason you are getting so angry and how you could learn to deal with that rather than trying to find a witty comeback.
why get angry? just ignore them there only saying that to get you going...
In the grander scheme of things, does it matter? pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
Chill out!
Why get angry about other people's ignorance? The only thing you can do is to try to educate them. Tell them that it requires skill dedication to excel and that you and your horse are team mates. If they want to argue about it, tell them that they ought to try it. That's what I used to say to people who didn't think color guard was a sport. I told them they could argue the point with me after a week of 8 hour practices in the August sun and rain, when they had blisters and scrapes and sunburns and ached all over or had gotten their nose broken twice by a bad rifle catch. Just smile and nod and know that they have no idea what they're talking about.
I would say "perhaps you should stand behind my horse and poke it in the leg with a stick."

offer to let them feel what its like to ride, if they can't ride your horse, then ask your trainer if they could lend you one of her or his beginner horses for your friend to ride. then explain to your friends that riding is a sport, if it weren't a sport then why is 3 day eventing is part of the summer Olympics? if they still don't believe you tell them that you sweat, you use muscles to manuever your horse, this brings me to something that one of my favorite trainers ever said to me " Riding horses is a great way to learn valuble life lessons, being able to communicate to a living breathing 1200 pound creature with a mind of its own, is totally amazing, everything you do to learn how to respond to that animal can be carried over into your every day communications with people. " hope this helps ?
Take no notice ,if they are prepared to qualify darts and snooker as sports ,one involving leaning over a table the other trying to ruin a perfectly good dartboard with sharp pointy things ,then the strenuous and lets face it,skillful and dangerous art of horse riding deserves to be classified as a sport.

Its an official Olympic sport. It requires strength, coordination, and balance from the rider and years and years of training. If ping pong and curling are sports (also recognized by the Olympics) then riding certainly is. Anyone who has ridden at a gallop would know. Tell them when they have galloped a horse, stayed on, and did it more than once intentionally then they are qualified to judge.
If you didn't get that angry you would be able to think of something to say. Work on that first. Tell them to get on youtube and look at videos. If they typed up "What is the most dangerous sport?" on the computer. Equine sports would probably be right there at the top of the list or close to it anyway.

Anything that you compete in would be called a sport.
They probably do that anyway because they think its funny to see you get so mad.
Just say "Okay! I guess you can go tell that to all of the people who ride in the Olympics. Being that riding is considered an Olympic SPORT ad all. The whole idea of the Olympics is to get the world's greatest athletes together to compete...."
Or just punch them.
I like option B better
tell them this, and make them watch the vid!! (:
I do a sport, with more deaths than yours. I do a sport, with more speed and power than yours. I do a sport, attached to my best friend. I do a sport, that takes guts. I do a sport, that uses more muscle than yours. I do a sport, you would never even dare to try.
In my sport... we don't have breaks or timeouts, there's no off season, and no one sits out on the bench, we don't postpone because of weather, and we don't quit on injury to ourselves, we don't talk to our team mates, we communicate... without words. if you think throwing a ball, jumping and running is hard, try it on horseback.
