Is it safe to ride my pony in snow?
I have a sound pony (Sunny) and he gets restless and lonely when he doesn't get ridden or played with. If there isn't much snow and I clear it away around corners/any poles or small jumps, is it safe? I've tried this once before because Sunny has been getting really restless lately. I kept the jump small (about a foot and a half) and cleared away snow before/after the jump and aroung corners. I also made sure nothing was slippery. Opinions?
I don't think I would jump in the snow because your horse could slip. But you could certainly do a walk and slow trot as long as your pony is not slipping around. If he is barefoot that would be best, but if he has shoes talk to your farrier about snow pads and additionall traction.
If there's no ice and it's grass underneath, you shouldn't have any huge problems. I'd take it easy, though, so no courses or anything. Just pop over a few, trot around and call it a day.
I wouldn't take the chance on jumping. Unless there is sand or something underneath. (:
