Breeding two sorrel horses together?
I was just wondering what coat colors you would possibly get if you breed two horses together that have sorrel coats?
answer: Sorrel = chestnut.
The genetics of horse colouration are highly complicated and until relatively recently wasn't fully understood. However chestnuts are relatively simple
Chestnut is a recessive gene and all horses, regardless of coat colour, have one chestnut gene. Two chestnut genes are required to produce a chestnut foal. As all chestnut horses thus have two chestnut genes you will always get a chestnut foal from mating two chestnut parents. However, it may not be solid chestnut. It could have white markings on face and or legs or it could even have as much white as to be Overo (for the benefit of non-Americans this a type of coloured or paint or pinto horse). pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
That's the easy bit. It gets much more complicated if you are breeding for other colours

Chestnut (from which the sorrel color stems) breeds true every time. So, if both parents are chestnut-based, the foal will be chestnut-based (same as parents). There is a horse DNA website where you can "plug in" your parent horse's colors and see the possible outcomes...and then there are many articles to read also.

Sorrel. Sorrel is recessive and you won't have any other color thrown in the mix.

Well they're both sorrel. You'd get a sorrel foal. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
