I just moved to a new barn on Saturday and things are going great! I have ridden my horse twice and he has settled in awesome. My BO asked me if I wanted to enter the jumping show they are having this Sunday. It will be anything from ground poles and crossrails to 4 feet. I have never jumped my new horse yet, but I have seen him jump. He used to jump on the A circuit for Hunters and was amazing. I have watched my old trainer jump him and he was awesome. My question is, should I enter him in it? I have jumped other horses that were not even trained to jump and I was fine. Everyone says my horse would just carry me over it and I would be fine.I would only enter him in ground poles and crossrails. My dad wants me to enter but I am not sure. Should I wait until they have the next one or should I jump him? No rude comments or answers please.
Thanks
xx
I would go along with the general consensus and agree that you should not try anything new or that you haven't done with your horse at a show. Someone said "what is the worst that could happen". Well, alot could happen. Experienced riders and trained horses get hurt all the time. There will always be another show. The most important thing to remember is "be safe" and use common sense. Good luck whatever you decide.
No, its never a good idea to do something at a show you have never done yourself. If you have a bad experience with him at the show, you may never want to do it again. Have a proper lesson before going to a show, practicing with just ground poles first. Even if you have jumped before on another horse, you never know how yours is going to react. If you ride and jump him a few times before the show, than you would be OK. I would just enter in a flat class and then do crossrails or ground poles for schooling in the warm up ring.
I would do the small jumps, if you are an experienced rider who has jumped before you should be ok with your new horse. If possible try and take him over a couple of small jumps? Just to see what he is like over them and to get used to him. It sounds like he is a good jumper so you should be fine! I have jumped 2ft6 jumps on the first time I have ridden a horse so with the cross poles you would probably both be really confident over them.Have fun jumping your new horse!!

Hope this helped:)
If it's just pole and cross poles it will do no harm. It should be fun and a great experience for you and your horse. If you're worrying about him not being settled, there will be times you will be going to shows in different places so this will be a good introduction to it.
Is your horse green or experienced? If green it will be a good experience. If he's an experienced horse then entering a show will be nothing new to him and he should be fine.
I would not suggest trying to jump any horse for the first time at a show. I would ask permission to maybe show the horse the cross rail course the night before and trot and canter him around then? You and your horse probably need to get back into jumping, if you haven't done it in a while you and he could end up sore, bring him back into it slowly.
if its just poles on the ground, i would go for it. We have yard shows alot at my yard and new horses come in all the time for training. They enter and do just fine. Its sometimes good to throw them in at the deep end ... Just whatever your comfortable with. Why don't you give him a jump before?
DO ITT. It is not that big of a deal. People try horses all the time at shows. BIG shows, and it is their first time riding the horse EVER. It is a very good way to get to know your horse a little better:)
You make it sound like you'd be entering an international showjumping comp. It's just a local stable competition, what's the worst that can happen. Just go for it.
