Going to start cantering for the first time soon!?

I go to lessons every thursday since like 2 months maybe.

And i can trot, walk, jog, sitting trot, and stand. My instructor says in a couple of weeks i will start my canter, with somebody cantering in front of me, to help me out a little.

So, i was wondering

what are the chances ill fall? I know, i know, i wont fall if i keep my heels down, but i may forget or something.

and is it scary at first?

does it hurt?
Your first cantar is an amazing experience! I actually still remember mine and it was a looonng time ago! I don't see why you'd fall off, your instructor wouldn't have you cantaring if ( s) he didn't think you could do it. Trust your horse:) I guess some people find it scary but it depends on whether you're quite a timid person and how fast your horse's cantar is-some horses cantar almost slower than they trot!

Hold onto your saddle-even if you ride English there should be room under the pommel (that's the bit at the front)

Falling off doesn't hurt much at all-infact you don't even know you're falling .. there's about a split second where you're like 'I'm going to fall off: |' and then you hit the ground . So there's nothing to worry about:) Cantaring is fun, so just relax and enjoy!
I was scared when I first started cantering as well, but don't worry. Lesson horses are used to first-timers, and I doubt your instructor would put you on a horse with a super rickety gait. I don't think it hurts to fall off cantering anymore than it hurts to fall off trotting or jumping, maybe even less. Cantering is the funnest gait to ride, good luck!:)
I find cantering alot easier than rising trot, if your managing all that you shouldn't worry, just sit deep in the saddle, grip with you legs/knees like you do in a sitting trot and go with it. Its a faster, much smoother pace. Its always a bit scary doing anything for the first time but you will have someone there with you advising you so dont panic. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

I have fallen off loads of times, its all part of it, i dont think ive ever felt any pain, just a bit embarrassed and silly but then you hop straight back on again.

Remember just enjoy
I fell off the first time I cantered. I lease a horse, so I didn't get to ride a horse with a nice slow canter. I had to deal with my mare's super long strides. Falling off is just a part of riding. I've fallen off five times (my instructor keeps count). Twice at the canter, once trotting, one walking, and once just sitting on the horse (long story). Just make sure your helmet fits properly and that you don't have a pony tail under the helmet. I wore my hair in a pony tail under the helmet, fell off, and ended up with a concussion. It had the same effect as being hit in the head with a hammer : (.

Don't think about falling off, and it probably won't happen.
Yeah, i fell off on my first canter too. It was my first "fall". More like a dismount ...

i landed on my feet, i just got back on. the first time cantering, you should ask your instructor if you could use a horse with a smooth canter, i used a horse with a pretty bouncy canter the first time so i was already off balanced. if you need the reins for support, than hold onto some mane so you don't catch your horse in the mouth ...

you could even ask if you could be lunged, so you won't have to focus on the horse, just not falling off and your not hurting your pony.
Ok, well i started to canter, of my own choice, out of a lesson, and the first time, i tensed up and lost control but managed to pull him back to a halt. So, i'm sure you'll be fine! Just sit tall, heels down, and relax, not too much , but relax! It comfy, and easier than sitting trot! Keep your reins short and go with it! Trust me, you won't fall off! The only scary thing is, that it's quite a bit faster than trot! But keep in control and stay straight! It's great fun! Let us know how it goes!
I remeber cantering for the first time.

I was so nervous!

But once i'd done it ... I just couldn't stop grinning. It will be fine, you feel so free ... And if you get nervous, just hold onto the front of the saddle aswell as the reins .. I did.:)
It will be okay. I have a horse of my own. At first, a little bumpy, but then u will notice the smoothness.
lol i fell off the first time i cantered: P not to scare you, i just got back on and tried it again. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

it might be a little scary at first, cause it is nothing like a trot or jog. as long as you have control your horse will be ok. keep in mind this is your first time cantering, but the horse has done it hundreds of times before. just remember lots of leg and if he/she gets too fast you know how to use the reins, but dont take your leg off or the horse will stop. its gonna feel fast so try your best not to pull back on the reins . hands up, heels down, lots of leg, and you'll be fine.

no it doesnt hurt lol

: Edit: it depends on the fall. All the times i've fallen off it was pretty much painless, but ive seen people fall and get kicked, land on their head, land in the wall ext. It really depends. Thing to keep in mind, if you feel like you're going down, drop your stirrups and let yourself slip off, then you can usually land on your feet and its no big deal:)
