I Keep Wondering If They Do Because What's The Point In Horse Names If They Don't?
- Please No Nasty Comments -
I don't think horses necessarily answer to that particular name being called. Different horses probably "like" other names better, and some it doesn't really make a difference. But mostly I think horses respond to your voice.
I realized my horses knew their names when I got a new mare. She was in with a gelding named "Chip" who could be really obnoxious. I'd yell his name to discourage him from doing something he shouldn't be doing, and her head would come up and she'd go on alert. After about 2 or 3 weeks she figured out who Chip was, so when I'd yell Chip's name she didn't react at all (but she did come when I called her name). I have one gelding now that I am not entirely certain he knows his name, but I may confuse him with all the nicknames I call him.
I think they do. I was away for 6 months and came back to the stables where he was being used as a working livery. I went to catch him with about 20 other horses in a huge field in foggy whether. I could not see him, but called his name and did the special whistle - and a screech went up, thundering hooves could be heard and nothing seen until the last few strides. He came for me! I have to confess I had a lump in my throat!
I only call to "Gambler" when I'm fetching him from the pasture. That way he knows it's me coming into the paddock and not another boarder. He lifts his head and walks fast paced right to me. He knows that word means that I am coming to get him (and not another horse), but I'm not sure he really understands that it is his name.
Both my horses do, im not quite sure if its the name or the sound off my voice as its only me they come running to when shouted from the field, yet they do react to other ppl in the stable x
I don't think mine does, but she knows my voice. I always shout at her in the same tone and say the same thing and she neighs back. I know a couple of horses who do know their name.
Mine do. When I get out of my car, I call his name, and he calls back to me. Both of mine come when I call them, and they can even differentiate who I'm calling.
Yes, they usually do. Even if they don't come over to you when you call their name, they usually lift their heads up.
yes, horses know their name. just like a dog they know their name.
