Okay, so Im breaking this horse for a friend and this horse is 4 and a half and he is a quarter horse around oh I'd say about 15.3hh and the way I break horses is I do it the right way I mean i don 't just hope on its back and do It that way. I mean it ushaly takes me 3 to 4 months to do it my way and the horses come out with very mild problems. But any way this horse that I am breaking know has a very troubled past he was neglected and abused and all that stuff Ive been working with him for 2 months and i know i have to take it slower with him cause of his past but for some reason this horse is terrified of the halter its a fight every day to show him that its not going to hurt him and he cant get that threw his head for some reason Ive had horses that i have broken that have been scared of just about every thing but this for me is kinda knew i had a horse who did this but not for long cause i broke him of it but this horse it just fights and fights and fights and ive taken it really easy with him not trying to scare him to much and giving him breaks when he needs them but im 2 months into breaking him and im still working on the halter its never taken me this long to work with just the halter and ive broken 15 horses in the last two years. Does any one have advice for me that could help. I do have a friend that is with me when i start out a horse and she helps when i need it but we havent been able to get threw to this horse at all im almost afraid hes a lost cause am i right!? and ive taken this horse to the vet time and time again to see if he had some sort of phiscl problem and thats why i couldn't get the halter on but the vet has said hes fine hes a health horse
I have had a few horses that wer neglected and it's a time taker.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com So I would completely stop working on starting him and get his trust. As if you don't have a horses trust somewhat then your gonna struggle.
When I got one of my 5 yr olds (3 when I got him) he was abused and beat. I couldn't even walk up to him. He would walk the fenceline to avoid people. It took me 3 months before I could walk up to him and pet him in his pen. When we needed to catch him we had to corner him and talk to him. And when I got up to him he was terrified and shaking. And if he thought you were gonna hurt him he would strike out.
So it took me about 1 year to get to where I can catch him, walk around him with out him watching every move I make, without trembling. And now he is in your back pocket. He was also very headshy so it took me a few months to actually be able to put on and take off a halter. So just working with him and praise him.
Does he let you touch his face or ears? As he sounds headshy. Lots of slow work wig petting his neck on up and just work on petting his cheeks as that is a huge step. Also rub around his ears. Work on this for about 10-20min a day then move on to something else. As baby steps is the way to take this. As his trust needs to improve before you think about starting him.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Email me if you have any questions or help on this. As I would be glad to help.
Have you tired positive reinforcement, once u get it on gave a treat he likes, take it off and do it again and reward him each time, i had a similar problem with a bit, bc my horse was head shy, but my giving treats and praising them it helps, good luck
let someone else have a go he might trust someone more then you (not in a nasty way). Cuz the horse i USED to ride he would do NOTHING for this otha girl but he'd do anything 4 me lol. Googd Luck hope it works out

Dosent sound like you have the experiance to be starting horses let alone abused ones.
and im not sure you have broken 15 horses as if you had you would have the experiance.
Now, if you want to train the horse properly then you need to understand it if you cant get a head collar on it then you need to peice it down to something the the horse is comfortable with
eg. touching the horses nose, face, forelock.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com once it accepts that then use just a peice of rope and get the horse comfortable with it around its nose, over its head, so on.
sarah has good ideas,
You need to learn alot and do lots of research on positive reinforcement, mabey even clicker training if its that bad.
search operant conditioning on google.
Treat the horse like a foal.
if not, let someone else have the job of training it.
well then your boss is a compleate ******,
running a rescue centre and wanting to put them down? geez
i think a halter friendly horse should be her objective not a brooken horse.
im sorry but sounds as if it will take at least a year, if he cant stand a headcollar what about a bit!? saddle!??
Buy the horse?
im sure she would give it to you if she thinks its that worthless.
Sorry, but going by your last few questions you don't sound like you have the experience to be breaking in any horses.
