really fast, uncollected canter?

  Hi,

I have at three year old horse I have recently started. She has cantered under a saddle three times now, all of which were out of control, super fast, almost galloping!!

She has tons of groundwork. She lunges beautifully, and knows walk, trot, woah, and canter with vocal commands. Her canter on ground is very collected when lunging.

Will this go away once she gets used to cantering with a rider? Or do I need to teach her to collect it?

I dont want to discourage her from keeping up the canter by pulling back on the reins, as she can be hard to get going ..
She's a baby! Of course she's going to be a bit rough round the edges - you ' l have to teach her to collect don't haul back on the reins - play with the bit a little by flexing your reins (gentle little movements side to side) it'll encourage her to drop her nose and collect for you.
she will be UNcollected for about a month. she's a baby and doesn't get where to put her head. her cater will be off because she has to find her pace. this will all go away in about a month of cantering. you don't need to tech her how to collect, please don't put a martingale on her. let her go a bit fast during the canter. when you are training young horses you want them to know how to "whoa" and move foward. Hope i helped and good wwork with your horse!=)
just finger the reins a bit when she starts getting too out of control. of course she will fix this when she has more experience.

Just once, ask her for a full out gallop and see what shes got. Let her get it out of her system, and then ask her for just the canter.

and dont be afraid to use the reins .. so what if shes a little hard to get there? you can do it again:)

she'll get better in time:)
She is still learning and it will take her quite a while to learn to balance with a rider. The best thing you can do is circle her on a large circle when she gets too fast . This will help her to re-balance without your impeding her natural, forward stride.
Just remember to sit back! when u lean forward, your putting her off balance, which of course will make her go faster.

if she gets too fast, pull her into a circle, and she will slow down.
Best way I have found to slow down the runners is to just let them run. Unless you can cowboy up and get on and decide that you will just let her run it will take you a long time and you will have to do a lot of sawing on her mouth to hold her in.

Just be prepared for a long ride and that you will stay with her till she will slow down or don't even try it.

Take her to the arena, take a deep seat and ask her to canter, when she takes off just hang in and hang on and let her run, If she really speeds and you feel the corners are dangerous, just take up on the inside rein and make her turn but do not use the outside rein to slow her down. If you have to keep circling do it but do not do anything to slow her. If you are tough enough and want it bad enough she will finially take a few slow strides and want to slow down. When she does let her and let her relasx at a walk a little.

Then ask for a canter again. Plan keeping up it up for a couple hours if she is an Arabian, they will just keep going and going.

You have to let them know that if they want to run they can but they will just have to keep going and that you will not try to stop them.
