What is wrong with my horse and what do I do?

I just recently acquired a 13 year old Purebred Arabian Mare. She has come down with something and I don't know what. She has been coughing, at first ran a temp of 104.3 but is now about 100. She is feeling better but still coughing. It's been rather chilly where I live so we have kept her in the barn to keep her out of the weather. She is on an antibiotic and an expectorant. She wasn't improving much so my mom took her to the vet and then noticed that her back legs are really swollen. The vet thought it could be from keeping her in. What does she have? Could the swollen legs be a reaction to the medication? Please help me. I love her so much and can't bare for her to leave me!
Yes, the swollen legs could be related a reaction to the medication, and you need to contact the vet for advice. I'm a little confused as to whether the vet has already seen the swelling, and whether the vet prescribed the meds you're giving. Until you speak with the vet, don't give another dose of either medication. Measure the horse's temperature and pulse, and how many breaths (breathing in and out once=one breath) per minute, and note any other observations such as the nature and frequency of her coughing, any chilling or loss of appetite, etc. The vet may want you to hand walk the horse to see if the swelling comes down, but the vet should make that call.
she may have a cold but i dont mean to mean and im sorry if this sounds mean but its not a good idea to post questions like this on here i posted one about my horse when she was sick and had tuns of ppl yell at me and get angry with me i thought id just let you know but yeah if you have doubt you need to go to your vet if you dont think your horse is in perfect health you should take her to the vet
If your vet has done a thorough exam and could not find what was going on, find a vet that can. There is no way for us to be able to tell you what is going on.
Sounds bad. if your vet checked her over already than i don't know what to say. sorry i wasn't much help!
Has the vet seen her swollen legs. If not I would suggest you call them again and get them to check her again.
I would get the vet to do more tests on her. We can't really help much, only your vet can.
maybe a cold but i would have to call my vet over the legs.
i once had a stallion that had a similar problem, we had a cold going through the herd and he caught it but then had problems with his back legs, they didn't swell but where very weak ..... so we kept him in so he wouldn't rough house and it didn't seem to get better .... well there is a whole story but in the end we let him out to exercise and within a few months he was better. somethings in horses occur with no explanation and they heal themselves. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

i would suggest to walk her around, and let her take it easy but you don't want to keep her in a stall for too long, try giving her some allergy medicine just in case she is allergic to her meds. let the vet look her over and he can give you more detail than i can.

we wish you luck! be patient, somethings heal over time.
Has the vet seen the swelling and doesn't know what it is? I would find another vet. Could be a reaction to the medication, until the vet sees the swelling (make him come and look not just over the phone) I would stop the medication. If there's heat in the swollen legs hose them for 10mins, take her for a 20min slow walk, hose them again for 10mins and see if the swellings gone down. Even if it hasn't I would still hose for 10-15mins 2x a day if you can (DON'T put linament, deep heat or any poultice clay stuff on it until you know the cause, this stuff can decrease swelling when you're treating the right kind of swelling, if wrongly treated these treatments can introduce more heat/trap heat in the swelling and make it worse). Talk to the vet about bandaging to get the swelling to disperse. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Even if you've been keeping her out of the weather have you been keeping her well rugged? Check to make sure she's warm enough if she is rugged otherwise off you go to the saddlery to buy a good winter rug:)

What is she being fed atm? Keep it low energy, low dust and not too much especially if she isn't doing anything atm.
