Flush it with moderate pressure using sterile isotonic saline if you have it. If not, use clean fresh water. Cover it in sterile non-stick gauze and (preferably sterile) bandage wrap and get him to a vet asap. You can wet the first layers of gauze with sterile saline and cover them with dry gauze under your wrap. Don't apply any wound medications that could interfere with the vet's ability to suture the wound. if you have Vetericyn (best) or Farnam Hydrogel on hand, you can safely apply one of them.

My mare got tangled in her fence the other night - she only scraped and bruised her leg, there were no deep cuts or anything but I called the vet out because that's the right thing to do. You actually have a legal responsibility to provide her with vet care, you can be prosecuted if you don't.
Above the knee takes in a pretty long area. But if it is those demensions, it must be a cut on the forearm in the heavy muscle area. If the tendon is not cut the wound should be cleaned and kept cleaned. A horse should always have been vacinated for tetnus. If the vet did stich it and it is on the forearm the stitches would not hold anyway.

We had one of our best rope mares cut that muscle almost into the bone, we were way out on a big ranch and we just doctored it ourselves and the wound granulated and filled in and left minimul scaring after it had healed. Big deep wounds on heavy mucle areas will heal very well. The mare would take either lead and we still used for roping.

For everyone who decided to answer this guys question, calling him a Moran etc., did you ever stop to think that this guy may love his horse and just maybe he could not afford to call the vet out to his horse, but wanted help and that's why he came to you all???? Before answering so rudely and obnoxious, maybe you could have ask what the circumstances were before answering.
I know this from experience. I own 3 horses and lost my job of 24 years and I could not call the vet.!!! You all must be very unhappy people, get a life!!! People come here for help not to be criticized !!!!!!!

If the vet cant come today cuz its 9:17 pm (where i live) clean it out. put water on a rag and just put it on the cut. how did the horse even get that huge cut? find out so it doesnt happen again!
