he is a 5year old thoroughbred X
and i want something to put in his food to help his bones as he is growing and to condition his muscles and make his coat all nice
i have heard that vegetable oil is good for there skin and coat:)
i don't want to put anything in his food that is going to make him loopy and hypo
1 quart of 12% complete feed and 1-2 cups of flaxseed a day, you can feed it all at once or split it in half and feed it twice a day. Feed the flaxseed whole (not grinded, not boiled and not soaked, t looses most of it's nutrients these ways) complete feed has all the protein, carbs and fats a growing horse needs and the flaxseed will make his coat shiny and healthy amoung other things. That's what I feed my 4 year old performance QH, she loves it and it's really starting to payoff
My 3.5yo TBxWB has Equine America Better Bones for his growing bones, and Cortaflex for his growing joints. He is also on Feedmark Original Balancer for vitamins/minerals/probiotics and this will also help him build topline (muscle) when he starts work.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com He loses weight very easily but i have to be careful what i feed him as don't want to make him fizzy, especially as he's not being worked. I have found Allan & Page Calm and Condition to be excellent for conditioning, without making him fizzy. I also had my TB eventer on this and its the only feed that didn't make him hyper! They both have beautiful coats and look really well. They also have Un-mollassed Alfa-A (which contains oil), good grazing during the day and ad-lib hay at night.
Go to your local feed supplier and ask them. They should know what you can add to your horse's feed for his bones and muscles. Although lots of walking will build his muscles . Bailey's Top Line was not right for my horse as he lost his shoulders!. Walking up and down hills is best and after a couple of months you will see a marked improvement. But DO ask about calcium etc. for bones. Tell them how old he is, what breed and any other information that may help.
Garlic will help coat condition.
Yes you can add oil for good joint health, but watch him carefully because a few horses I've cared for have had alergic reactions to oil, so it might not be for him!

I'm not sure about anything for his bones and muscles, you will need a more specialised product for that!
Gold label cod liver oil also has vegatable oil in it. Try haylage in the winter months, more nutrition you can get it in bags and small cubes as it needs to be used within 7 to 10 days after opening. Make sure he is rugged for the weather.
Vegetable oil is fine, that or Curragh carron oil is also good for coat and condition, but other than that you don't need much more. Once he has plenty of hay as well as feed he should be fine.
We put vinegar (the special horse kind from countrywide) and garlic in our thoroughbred x's food:)
Feed him a good balanced feed and lots of hay, that is all they need besides regular worming and farrier care.
If he is on a healthy & proper diet, dewormed every 2 months as he is supposed to, groomed daily, and his health is good, he shouldn't need much more than grain and/or hay. If you REALLY wanted to put more things, a little vegetable oil is good, there are supplements for their coat/hooves/skin, and you could put just a PINCH of paprika or garlic in their grain. (:

EDIT:: K, um, who the hell is giving all the thumbs down? My only guess could be the certain person with none down yet.. Just because you give people a thumbs down doesn't necessarily mean it will help them not get picked. (;
