Because everyone does it a little differently, I'm just curious:
1) How often do you deworm your horse (s)?
2) Do you do rotational worming? If so, what is the rotation and with with brands?
3) Have you ever have fecals taken? If so, what where the general results?
4) Why do you deworm the way you do?
xxThanks!
1) I have a daily dewormer and then I deworm with paste twice a year
2) We rotate brands of wormers each year. We do stick with Strongid for the daily but so far my vet has rotated our pastes. I have honestly not looked at the brand names. I know we use an organophosphate in the fall and a general plus tapeworm (like ivermectin) in the spring.
3) We had fecals taken when we signed up for the program (PreventiCare). My mare was pretty much clean seeing as she had been dewormed only 1 month before. Others had considerable ascarids because we have 3 young horses in our barn.
4) This system is the easiest I have found and keeps my mare worm free. She hates pastes but easily eats her worming pellets. We have one family that does the rotational deworming and it seems to work fine for them. I think it's really just the method you prefer.
1) I de-worm my horses every 8 weeks.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com 2) I use Equimax every March and September. In between i use normal ivemectrin and pyrantal pamoate, rotating each de-worming. Generic brands of these work just as well as the expensive stuff. If I suspect a horse has a heavy worm load ( long shaggy coat, thin, difficulty holding condition) I will de-worm with a Panacur Power Pac, which is a 5 day heavy dose wormer that will knock out any worms the horse may have.
3) I have fecals taken twice a year. Spring and fall at the same time we do vaccines. The general results are negative, but I will occassionally have a horse that I have recently acquired have some worms. Also, my yearlings occassionally will have some worms. Any horse with a positive fecal result is treated with a Power Pac.
4) I de-worm this way because I sell and show horses and require them all to have show-quality hair coats at all time. Also, having worms means I have to feed my horses more grain to keep weight on them, and the additional feed is far more expensive than an aggressive de-worming schedule.
1) How often do you deworm your horse (s)? Every 2 months.

3) Have you ever have fecals taken? If so, what where the general results? Nope, not usually.
4) Why do you deworm the way you do? It is vet recommended, and it keeps your horse healthy and prevents their coat from looking dull.
I use a daily wormer (Strongid C2X) and twice a year I use Equimax. My vet strongly recommends the daily wormer because it controls worms all the time and doesn't allow them to build up a colony. My vet explained that when you worm a horse w/paste, then the worms make one last attack as they are being killed and that's rough on a horses 'system. Plus, as soon as the wormer has made it through the horses' system, the colony starts building again and has 4, 6 or 8 weeks to build up again. So by feeding the daily wormer , the colony never builds up and their system never has to deal w/a final attack. It averages out to about $ 10 per horse per month and to me it's worth it.
1. i currently de worm 4 times a year, each season
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
2. I do with exquimax and equimax pramox as these flush out the correct worms in each season
3. I haven't
4. I do it as to make sure the yard is clear of worms as they can be a major problem to young and old horses alike. I find also doing it like this keeps the chances of getting worms very low and keeps the paddocks clear
I know many people who only worm twice a year, once in summer once in winter with a total flush wormer. It works but as i have a high number of horses i find this way is better
you worm them ever six to 8 weeks and if you do this they shouldent get worms but go from the cheap kind to the excpensev back to the cheap and just keep rotating it but you need to do it every 6 to 8 weeks or the might get worms
1) twice a year
2) yes but I'm not sure which kind the barn orders
3) I'm sure they have, results idk
4) this kinda confuses me. What do you mean? We deworm the horses through their mouth directly, that way we are sure they get it.
1. Every eight weeks (to the day. Im a spazz like that).

2. I go from Ivermectin to Pyrental (i think, if im remembering correctly.)
3.No
4. Vet says how often, a lot of horse people in my area deworm with the Ivermectin then Pyrental
I deworm twice a year, but I have my horse's fecal matter tested. I had it done end of summer and she had a 0 egg count.
