I used to lease this gelding and now I only lesson on him (probation because I was being a brat and didn't deserve the privilege). I really like him, still, though. He's very sweet and he seems to love his job. Here's the basics:
21 or 22 years old
Gelding
Light gray (flea bitten)
16.3hh
Has shoes
95% sound (has bucked and bolted before, but he hasn't recently)
Smooth gaits
Takes a little motivation to make him canter (usually with a crop)
Pure thoroughbred
Only has half a tail (someone wrapped a tail bag too tight)
Healthy
Wonderful, wonderful personality
I feel safe riding him, but I also feel like I could still learn something from riding him.
How much do you think he's worth? I can easily come up with $ 2000 (I'm patient and will work for the money)
I also know how to care for a horse and how to ride one. I know what owning a horse is like, and I think that all that's standing in the way is money. If I buy him, since he'll be so old, I'm going to keep him forever:) Thanks
$ 1,500 - $ 2,000 would be the maximum ammount i would be willing to pay for a 22yr old thoroughbred.

goodluck (:
i wouldn't pay over $ 1000 for him and even that's high. thoroughbreds don't generally tend to live as long as other breeds so at 22 he doesn't have that many years left. it definitely sounds like he has issues, so it's not even like he's a 22-year-old schoolmaster. i think your best bet would be to go back to leasing him.
Soundness has to do with how he moves and whether he's healthy in every way .
If he moves without any irregularities and breathes normally, etc. He's sound.
Bucking and bolting is a different issue.
He seems nice but i must warn you! Thoroughbreds are VERRY hard to keep weight on and can be alot of money for special feeds but if you feel like he is right 4 u go for it !! good luck xx
There's no way I'd pay 2k for a 20 + horse. You can get the exact same horse half the age for 2k.
Why would you buy a horse that wasn't 100% sound?
£ 1500
If you buy him and want to keep him forever, that might not be very long!! I understand that a 20 year old horse its equivelent in human years would be around 66 years. You had better do a little inquiring as to what people in your area can do with a horse that gets sick and down or if you have to find a place for them to go if they become disabled.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com I would think someone would be just nutso to pay anywhere near $ 2,000 for a 20 year old horse. If you do not have or have not seen the papers he may be well over that age. And if you love him you would just be setting yourself for a lot of heartache and pain.
If you are any kind of a rider at all and you do not just occupy space on top or a horse you could probably buy a very nice young or green horse for a fraction of that price and go on with the training yourself.
He sounds like a nice teacher horse. But, take into consideration, his age and he is not 100% sound. Thoroughbreds are nice but highstrung horses, i used to own one. He would be worth about $ 1,500 - $ 2000. If I were you , I would look for a younger horse to buy. There are some great horses out there that can be great teachers. Im my past i had a 15yr old arab/morgan cross and she taught me everything. I then got my thoroughbred and he was a challange, he was 8yrs old, off the track. I then moved onto a 12yr old mustang/hanoverian cross pony. I have him still and love him to death. He was a lesson pony before i got him. I think it would be best if you looked for a younger school horse, you dont have to stop ridieng your friend though. Around 10-12yrs old, i would look for a school horse. That would cost anywhere from $ 2,000 - $ 10,000 depending on training, and seller.
