So I got my mini earlier this year, he was 6 months old when I got him. Hes now 1 year old. But when I got him, the owners said he was gelded.
Can a horse be gelded at that age? Because I always thought they were older when they did.
He's high spirited, but he is really young. He gets along well with my big gelding * my standardbred *. So I don't know whether or not to think did he or didn't he get gelded.
It's entirely possible that he was gelded as you were told. If you question it, a simple blood test can be performed to determine whether he has elevated testosterone levels. While the temperatures within the abdomen prevent undescended testes from producing live sperm, the endocrine function in producing testosterone remains intact.
Since you need vet attention for your other horse anyway, you could easily have the vet pull a blood sample on this guy when he comes for the other horse.
Since testicles retained in the abdominal cavity or inguinal canal are more likely to develop cancer, it is something that should be investigated eventually. Surgery to remove the testicles can become more complicated if they are within the abdominal cavity and become entangled with intestinal tissues, for example, which is more likely to occur when the surgery is postponed over longer periods of time. If your vet can feel both testes fully present in the inguinal canal, there are fewer risks associated with waiting to see if they will descend on their own.
I've never heard of gelding that young - ours are all gelded as yearlings (tb's irish sports and warmbloods). 2 of our current stallion potential 2 year old oldenburg's can happily be left out in a field together and they dont fight - so they way he is with the standie is quite normal as in the wild they form bachelor herds.

I bought a mini for my daughter (she's 4) he pulled a carrige and things - however he was apparantly''gelded''he was a rig (semi gelded) so behaved like a stallion so now he's the permenant teaser pony on the stud it's hilarious he's 28inches at the shoulder and most of the mares are over 16.2hh.
He could very well be a rig see hows he behaves around mares.
Yes some people do, we wait about 2 months after they are weaned (8months) to wean them. And if his testicles don't drop then he has been gelded. If your that unsure and worried you can call the vet and have them look.
