So my vet gave me a tube of Banamine to give to Hollywood after he kicked himself in the head. There were about 5 doses in the tube which are now gone. I have a tube of Bute left over from August when he was diagnosed with navicular . His face is still swelled up like a balloon (which the vet said is normal) and he's still pretty tender to the touch which does not surprise me in the least. I'm going out of town tomorrow until Sunday and I'm having a friend check up on him and put his medicine in his eye while I'm gone and she told me she's got a year's worth prescription for Banamine if he needs more.
So my question is, should I just get more Banamine from her for him or give him the Bute? I don't know what the real difference between the two is. I haven't had hardly any experience with either one which I guess is a good thing. I know Bute is bad for the liver if you give too much or for too long but that's pretty much all I know about either.
So should I get more Banamine for a few more days or just give him the Bute?

I would go with the Banamine as it's a lot stronger then the Bute. As if you ever have a horse that has a minor case of colic and you give them a shot of Banamine you will notice a difference in anywhere from 5 -20 min and the pain is gone. Where Bute takes longer getting into the painful area. And like some others said its more potent then Bute (stronger).
Kinda like somebody taking a Advil vs Morphine ...... whats gonna be stronger and take the pain away faster? Morphine.
Banamine is the same class of drug (NSAID) but is four times more potent than Bute, so your vet must have felt the horse needs that level of medication initially. I'd call the vet for advice, since you don't want your horse to be undermedicated to relieve pain and inflammation. it may be that Bute is sufficient at this point , but I'd want advice from the vet.
Bute is used more for muscular-skeletal problems; Banamine is used more for organ type problems (colic, surgery, eyes, etc.).

If your horse has an eye injury, then I'd think Banamine was in order.
Please ask your vet. I know Banamine is a lot more expensive, but it's worth it to give your horse the right stuff.
Banamine is a pain killer, bute helps with inflamation.
Bute's like tylenol, not as strong as banamine
