This winter I am clipping my horse. My horse is in a stall at night and outside during the day (if it isn't way too cold. It gets below -30 Celsius).
If he is clipped should he have a stable blanket for when he is in his stall and how much weight?
1)
How many grams (blanket weight) should a clipped horse be wearing when it is (in Celsius):
a) -5
b) -10
c) -15
d) -20
e) -30
I want this but I don't know if it will do:
1) 350-400 g stable blanket
2) 250 g turnout
Would those do?
I could also buy a heavyweight turnout. But I'm thinking that I could layer the stable blanket and the turnout outside and just have the stable blanket on inside.
2)
For a different horse, how many grams of blanket weight should it be be wearing (in Celsius)
for
a) -5
b) -10
c) -15
d) -20
e) -30
f) -40 (with shelter. It's my friends WELSH pony so it will be super fuzzy, have a bedded shelter and a hood)
I second Jillian Anne. Another option is to buy a combo set of sheets. I know that Weatherbeeta sells these, they call them a "rug sac". Usually it's a midweight stable blanket, fleece sheet and turnout sheet that can be combined in different ways so that your horse always has the protection that they need. This is also usually cheaper than buying many different blankets.

This is my rule of thumb for my clipped horses:
60 degrees and above: no blanket
59 - 45 degrees (or rain): lightweight sheet (no fill)
44 - 30 degrees: medium weight blanket
29 degrees and below: heavy weight blanket
Stable blankets are nice, but if you are working on a budget I would suggest making sure all the blankets you buy are waterproof so your horse can wear them inside and outside.
