Do to my addiction of horses i have ended up with 8!
my dad says its time to sell two, i already know the ones.: (
Gunner 4yrold hackney pony
&
JObe 16-17yearold QH??
As you can guess these are the horses we use the least and are the most problematic,
Gunner still has ALOT of potential and we will be breaking him to drive soon, he is broke neck reins backs walks trots canters, it just a BIG butt head, has ALOT of stamina, and NEVER gets tired, thats why he wouldnt be great for a begiiner, he dosnt really buck, but he has sooooo much spunk i just dont know, and he is the cuitest thing ever and he knows it!
Jobe, dont know anything about him except he was or was going to be raced, he has a lip tattoo, pin firing on his hock and when he sees other horses in front of him it means GO!, He gets nervese and weird because your trying to stop him and he is trained to go, if he is by himself he is pretty good, he IS Light to the touch neck reined, backs willingly w/a light pull on the reins, he is smooth and doesnt buck or rear, he is awsome with his feet and tacking up ect. NOT spooky,
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com The only thing he is lame from arthritis in his pin fired hock, we have him on a glucosimine supplement along with senoir feed as of know, if you know my dad he will not take him to a vet unless he REALLY needs it.
Gunner we are not in such a hurry to sell because we can work with him but jobe has to go, I just dont want him ending up in a loose pen, or with someone that can handle him, * Which will most likely happen if we bring him to a sale * which we were originaly planning to do ...... I was thinking of putting him on craigslist telling what his problems are and sell him for 100 bucks, so i know hes in a decent place, I need help! Can you suggest anything? I dont know of any rescues that he could go to! THANKS!!
A horse is livestock not a pet, sell both of them for the most you can get and use the money to better train your other horses.
Honestly .... you are so lucky & so clueless .... Me, I shop at Wal Mart & cannot afford a horse of my own, but then, my mom & dad aren 't paying for anything ....
Honestly, you are a spoiled:/
Everyone tells me I am spoilt too - I've got 4. I know I'm spoiled and I love it: D.

Anyway, I think your best option would be to give the older horse away as a companion and light hack (not sure of the equivalent US word, basically an occasional casual ride) to someone who will love him. An older horse that is lame will probably not sell for any price.
Selling an older crippled ex race horse is not going to be easy .. There's a lot of horses around in this bad horse market .. (For a number of reasons ...) Which I 'm not going to get back on the soap box and explain again. If you can get 100 bucks you will be lucky, but you might increase your odds if he's free to a good home as a pasture pet. But you might very well be faced with the prospect of putting him down too so be prepared for that as well.
Put a problem horse on craigslist for $ 100 and you'll have someone turn up promising the world, but he'll end up in a knackers yard being made into dog food. Horses under $ 2-400 are cheap, cheap horses attract kill buyers! And they're devious too.
I would market Jobe on a proper horse selling website, not craigslist, and sell him as a companion horse, not a ridden horse. Thus avoiding the problems with lameness, as long as you are upfront with all his problems!
If you want the older horse to find a decent home quickly, then advertise him as a pasture horse and free to good home only. It is unlikely that people will pay anything for an older lame horse especially when you consider that sound ex race horses will go for next to nothing anyway. If you cannot find him a home and he is pain, then the kindest thing you could do is have the horse put down.

The young hackney will likely sell quick enough.
If you do feel strongly about him getting into a good home and money is not really an issue I would put up ads (craig's list, tack shops, newspaper, etc) and, like you said explain his "quirks".
***** I * would not * offer a horse for $ 100 bc that will do two things 1) make people suspicious as to why he is so cheap ... 'there * must * be something wrong with him' is what I would think and 2) bring in any low-life looking for cheap meat .******
If you have the skills, I would set up a little webpage for him: picture at the top, name, description, and lay out the ground rule and put the website link on a very simple flyer that could go up in shops, etc. ..
Ground Rules: I would explain that him going into a good, loving home is most important. Therefore, horse is either free to good home-or-price negotiable-or-open to offers BUT you get to go and check out the place. Make sure you list what criteria are important to you (eg keep in stall x-size, needs pasture space of blah blah size and time, he is usually fed blah blah blah, etc.)
